Orpheus Island re-opens after $7.5-million refurbishment

Escape into the heart of the Great Barrier Reef for an intimate island honeymoon packed with both adventure and romance

If your idea of heaven is hiding away from the world on a palm-fringed beach, but hell is lying still, then the newly re-opened Orpheus Island might be the honeymoon destination of your dreams.

The island, bought for $6.25 million last year has just undergone an A$7.5 million refurbishment with the aim of becoming Australia's most exclusive island destination.

Orpheus Island's refurbishment, including all the beachfront accommodation, is driving towards sustainable luxury. There are three new self-sustaining eco-tents that have no 'footprint' on the earth and give guests the ultimate luxury eco-experience. Prefer walls to canvas? Opt for one of the beachside suites with panoramic views over the idyllic Hazard Bay.

Found 80km off the Queensland coast, Orpheus is located amid the paradisaical Great Barrier Reef. It's not uncommon for guests to swim alongside turtles, manta rays and humpback whales just off shore.

The island only accommodates 34 guests at any one time, so you're ensured privacy. To get completely away from the world, discover the island's pristine bays and reefs from the helm of your own dinghy. Or, head out on a fishing trip to  catch your own supper and grill it on an open fire on the beach.

Couples can also take a cultural tour led by indigenous locals, visit a local marine research station, or enjoy some world-class diving and snorkelling. For a special treat, have a romantic dinner for two on the island's pier as the sun sets over the Coral Sea.

Don't fancy heading Down Under?
