Thinking about going overseas to tie the knot? You're not alone - 'weddingmoons' are on the increase
More couples are choosing to get married abroad and combine their wedding with their honeymoon to save money, according to a new study.
Compareweddinginsurance.org.uk found that almost 6% of UK couples got married abroad in 2011. These weddings were a third cheaper than the average wedding held in the UK, often because couples invited fewer guests. Adam Leyton, managing director of compareweddinginsurance.org.uk said: "With economy the way it is, it's no surprise that more couples are choosing to get married overseas."
Nicky Evans, from Surrey, got married in Italy last summer. "We decided to have our wedding abroad for two reasons," she said. "Firstly, it was cheaper: for less than the price of the average UK wedding, we hired a villa for five days where all of our guests could stay, had a Michelin-stared chef make the wedding breakfast and stayed in Italy for a week-long honeymoon afterwards.
"The second reason we decided to marry abroad was that we didn't want to feel obliged to invite relatives we never see; we just wanted the people we loved to be there."
According to a recent survey of 1,000 adults in the UK conducted by OnePoll and commissioned by Beachcomber Hotels, the average UK wedding costs £21,000 compared to £6,500 overseas. 55% of those surveyed in Beachcomber's poll would choose to go overseas for their wedding, and there's been a 27% increase in couples getting married abroad in the last five years.
Nicky's preference for a small wedding is echoed by Beachcomber's results: 40% wanted 20 or fewer guests at their weddings. Only 23% wanted 60 or more guests to attend their big days. One in 20 wanted to elope and get married by themselves.
To find out more about the practical and legal requirements involved in marrying abroad, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office recommends that you contact the British Embassy in the country you are planning to marry in. Marryabroad.co.uk is also full of tips.
