Tis the season of mist and mellow fruitfulness, when the northern hemisphereʼs still richly abundant (Spanish vineyards, Portuguese port houses) but starting to cool
Enjoy Indian summers at home or hop over to the USA's sunshine state: California temperatures still reach 25°C. In the southern hemisphere, spring is sprung - nice for city strolls (Buenos Aires, Sydney, Perth). Asia is a mix: India is post-monsoon; Thailand still soggy.
It's all about festivals, beer and culture in Germany's third largest city
Fancy a 16-day party in a huge tent? Head to Oktoberfest, one of the planet's largest beer festivals and Munich's big draw. That said - it's not all about the booze: the Auer Dult fair, the Science Fair, and the Long Night of Museums all take place during October. Take the time to visit the Deutsches Museum too, the largest science museum in the world.
No need to be a mountaineer to honeymoon in the Himalaya. The world's highest range is divine in October-November: days are warm, skies are clear and trekking routes accessible. The greater range extends 4,500km across Pakistan, India, Nepal, Tibet and Bhutan. Nepal's Everest and Annapurna regions offer classic and easily arranged hikes; budget-mooners can camp or stay in teahouses, while both areas have luxury trekking lodges if greater comfort's key. Non-hikers can relax in lakeside Pokhara, explore the temples of Kathmandu, track tigers in Chitwan National Park and take a scenic flight over Everest.
North India has some fine Himalaya boltholes, plus good trekking. Bhutan is more exclusive, with a real Shangri-La feel. Stay at the Uma Paro hotel for pure luxury.
Warm and dry in October-November, this Indian Ocean island is wildlife heaven. Spot 70-plus species of lemur and other endemic creatures, and bring binoculars to watch wonderfully rackety birds. Stay at a beach lodge (like romantic L'Hotel Anjajavy) for extra pampering.
Late September to early December, Hong Kong's skies are clear, temperatures nudge 26°C but humidity is low. For the city at its most romantic, watch the nightly light show illuminate the skyscrapers, sip cocktails in a rooftop bar and sail to laidback Lantau Island.
Cornwall's cracking cliffs and coves are an ideal backdrop for an autumn cottage hideaway. Bracing seaside walks will work up an appetite for local goodies: Cornish cider, pasties and oysters - the aphrodisiac molluscs come into season in October, celebrated at Falmouth's Oyster Festival.
Blissful temperatures (30°C) and calm seas (better for diving), make these Indian Ocean isles an autumn paradise. Plus it's not peak season, so deals can be found. To really escape, venture to the scarcely inhabited Outer Islands.
The legendary Pacific Coast Highway is one of the world's most scenic drives, spanning much of California, from LA to San Francisco and beyond. Under the still-warm autumn sun, linger on the wave-bashed Big Sur section, hike in Los Padres National Forest and visit hilltop Hearst Castle.
