Schoolʼs out, and popular spots across Europe (Med resorts, Italian lakes) are a-swarm with tourists
Quiet corners can be found - you just need to look a bit offbeat. Or explore further afield instead - Alaska, Canada and tropical South America, perhaps. Pacific outposts such as Fiji and Tonga are dry but not yet sweltering, while many Indonesian isles - like Bali - are blessed with sea breezes. Alternatively, hit New Zealandʼs peaks for ʻsummerʼ skiing.
It's festival fever throughout August in Dublin
From the Guinness Storehouse Summer Festival to the Rhythm and Roots Festival or the Dublin Horse Show - to name a few - there's plenty to see and do in this buzzing city. Or, if festivals aren't your bag, take a gentle stroll along the cast-iron goliath that is the Ha'penny Bridge, or explore the abundant art galleries and quintessentially Irish pubs of Temple Bar.
Welcome to island paradise: cerulean lagoons, pristine sands and coconut palms scattered over 300 islands. And right now (May-September) it's dry season - 25°C-30°C , low humidity, lovely.
International flights land on main island Viti Levu; spend a few days exploring its lush interior by 4WD before escaping to remoter shores - either by plane or boat. For unspoilt, prehistoric landscapes, find a romantic hideaway among the Kadavu group. Home to the Great Astrolabe Reef - more than 100km of underwater canyons and caverns - the diving here is superb. Further north lies the Lomaiviti group, where you can see humpback whales off the coast of Ovalau (May-September) and a landscape peppered with volcanic craters and sparkling waterfalls.
Lovely though it is, Fiji's a long haul; rather than fly straight there, consider a multi-stop airfare to break the journey, perhaps dropping into LA, then soaking up Fiji, then wintry New Zealand and sizzling Hong Kong.
Beautiful Bali does live up to the hype (just avoid over-developed Kuta). In August the rains are lightest and the temperatures cooler - ideal for roaming the artsy streets of Ubud, seeing the ancient rice terraces of Jatiluwih or surfing the south coast.
Just pre-harvest, the vineyards of Burgundy are heavy with grapes - and the bottled end product is abundant, too. Take a private boat cruise along the Canal de Bourgogne, from Dijon to Beaune, to float past ancient castles, historic lock-houses and fine wineries for a tasting or two.
It's worth braving the summer heat for Verona's Opera Festival (Jun-Aug). Played out in the city's Roman arena, it's a romantically candlelit affair with passionate performances. Verona was also home to Shakespeare's most famous lovers: pay your respects by hollering for Romeo from Juliet's balcony.
The short summer's arrived, the snows have melted and the brown bears are hungry. Head to Katmai NP to watch the animals pick off migrating salmon in Moraine Creek and Geographic Harbor.
It's the ideal time to visit the much-vaunted beaches of this rejuvenated east African nation: wall-to-wall sunshine by day and cool evenings. Head offshore to the unspoilt Quirimbas Archipelago, where pristine sands and top ecolodges await.
