Uncover the romance of London's fringe theatre this Valentine’s

Still frantically searching for something special to do tonight? Something original, something romantic, something like the theatre perhaps?

But by now all the famous West End shows your other half has casually mentioned they would be excited to see are either sold out or selling the final few tickets (at quadruple the initial price!).

Never fear! There are plenty of options around London's varied and vibrant fringe theatre scene that can guarantee you and your partner a truly unique and enjoyable experience, all without breaking the bank. Below are Unique Honeymoon's top five theatre performances taking place tonight (14 Feb), with tickets currently available (at the time of writing) for under £25.

Book quick before they're gone, exclaims Jack Palfrey, and mediocrity prevails!

Bear: The Tragedy of a Woman Who Gave Birth to a Grizzly Bear

Where: Old Red Lion Theatre
How much: £15
Start time: 7:30pm
How to book: Visit www.oldredliontheatre.co.uk/bear.htm or call 0207 837 7816.

As ridiculous as this sounds, this play, that's enjoyed a long stint at the Old Red Lion Theatre in Islington, is a very human tale of the challenges faced by every couple looking to take the huge step into parenthood. The three-hander comedic play benefits from two strong leading actors (Anna Wheatley and Michael Gilhooly) who play their parts with complete integrity throughout. To top things off the theatre space is housed above one of the oldest (and most synthetically beautiful) pubs in London, meaning a great meal and top London ale are only a staircase away after the curtain falls.

Lost Boy

Where: Charing Cross Theatre <www.charingcrosstheatre.co.uk>

How much: £19 - £26.50
Start time: 7:30pm
How to book: Visit www.charingcrosstheatre.co.uk or call 08444 930 650.

If you prefer your Valentine's Day entertainment less comedic in tone, then the intriguing Lost Boy could be for you. This musical is a dark sequel to J M Barrie's classic Peter Pan, reuniting the lovable characters on the eve of the First World War, as they swap the magic of Neverland for the muddy trenches of Flanders. All of your old favourites are there, although you may not recognise them at first. John for example is now a gay trapeze artist, Peter an army general and Tinkerbell a streetwalker. The musical ultimately tells what it is to grow up while also reflecting the shock and horror of an innocent world thrust into the brutality and cruelty of The Great War. Romance is overrated anyway.

Wuthering Heights

Where: Barons Court Theatre
How much: £10
Start time: 7:30pm
How to book: Call 020 8932 4747 or buy tickets on the door.

For the more sophisticated couple, how about a musical based on the classic novel by Emily Bronte? This musical suits the Valentine's Day vibe with a story of lovers from different worlds engaging in long-winded speeches (and now songs!) of belonging, desire and terrible vengeance, but hey this is a classic that fits the occasion. The production boasts a strong cast and fantastic intimate setting, being housed in the basement of the Curtains Up pub in West Kensington. The pub, with its cosy yet modern décor and all-pleasing bistro menu is the perfect setting for a romantic meal. Two birds, one stone.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

Where: The Vaults
How much: £25
Start time: 7:30pm
How to book: Visit www.thevaultfestival.com/fear-and-loathing

As part of its six-week-long Vault Festival, the Vaults, an amazing underground venue in the tunnels beneath Waterloo station, is showing the stage adaptation of Dr Hunter S Thompson's drug-fuelled, mind-bending, cult classic, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Approached with all the vibrancy and energy those who have read the book would expect, this is definitely the most unusual play Londoners can expect to see this Valentine's Day. While not without its shortcomings, this is a successful stage conversion of the book, complete with flashing lights, shape-shifting cast members and the iconic convertible present on stage throughout.

The Drowned Man: A Hollywood Fable, a Punchdrunk Production

Where: National Theatre
How much: £47.50 (over budget but definitely worth it!)

Start time: 9pm
How to book: Visit www.nationaltheatre.org.uk/shows/the-drowned-man-a-hollywood-fable

Immersive theatre reaches soaring new heights with Punchdrunk's newest production, which maintains the company's unique formula of having audience members walk through a series of rooms and settings to create their own narrative. The Drowned Man is the company's biggest and most ambitious offering yet, and it's difficult to express what exactly happens once you step inside, except that you are instantly transported back into a living and breathing 1960s London. Who you talk to, what you do once you're inside, is completely up to you. Sit at the bar and listen to live jazz, follow a certain character around or simply relax on a sofa. This isn't an interactive play, this is an interactive world. The experience can last from anywhere between an hour to three hours, it's entirely up to you…
