Top 7 romantic autumn activities in London

Top 7 romantic autumn activities in London

The weather may be getting cooler but things in London are hotting up this autumn. We chart the most romantic activities to share with your partner

1. Take a leafy autumn walk

London is famous for its abundance of green spaces, but it's when the leaves fall and the autumn sunshine is ablaze that they revel in their true glory. Wrap up warm and don your best boots for a romantic stroll - Richmond Park, Hampstead Heath and Regents Park are particularly dreamy at this time of year, the latter is also offering an Autumn Ramble on 12 October 2013.

If you fancy adding a regal aspect to your stroll, devise your own Royal Parks Walk: there are five in the centre of London (eight in total) and you can walk across them all in just three hours. Check out the interactive maps on the website beforehand and plan your route.

2. Fill your bellies

If you and your partner are foodie fans you'll be in heaven this October as the London Restaurant Festival hits town 3-21st. From Michelin-starred restaurants to neighbourhood bistros, the festival lifts the lid on London's finest food. Expect discounted meals, foodie film nights and specialised passes like the 'Gourmet Odyssey', which allows you to undertake a gastronomic road trip across the city. It's advisable to book your tickets well in advance as events and passes quickly sell out. Bon Appetite!

3. Enjoy fireworks

What could be more romantic than dancing flames and inky skies aglow with colour? Spark up some passion in your relationship and head to one of the hundreds of firework and bonfire displays dotted around London in November. Grab some treacle toffee to share and cuddle up in the cold during the public chorus of 'oohs and ahhhs' and who knows, maybe you'll create your own private chorus at home…

4. Experience old-school romance

Hark back to the good old days when courting couples would enjoy a fine evening of music and dancing, and pay a visit to Wilton's Music Hall. The oldest surviving music hall in the world, Wilton's has been entertaining love birds since 1858 and it's easy to see why - it's intimate and rustic Mahogany Bar makes the ultimate date spot, with live music (free and played most Monday's) evoking a wonderful feeling of times past. The Green Room Cocktail Bar upstairs is also a great spot to feed each other some Italian aperitivos (light-bites); the price is 'pay what you can' and cocktails are served from 6pm Tuesday to Saturday.

5. Get arty after hours

Whisper sweet nothings across the Tate's echoing galleries from October when their annual Late at Tate events return. Held bi-monthly on the last Friday of the month, expect plenty of live performances, music, film and insightful art talks. There's also drinks and a live DJ that brings a whole different vibe to the gallery, making it a unique place to woo your loved one.

6. Lose yourself in London

If you fancy a more private setting within the city, head to the secret haven of St. Dunstan in the East Church Garden. It might sound like a bizarre place for a romantic rendezvous, but the church is now actually a public garden after it was severely damaged during The Blitz. Climbing plants weave their way around the bombed ruins giving the garden a fairytale feel, and there's a peaceful water-fountain trickling in the background. Despite its beauty few people are aware that it even exists, so grab a picnic and relax in quiet.

7. Scare yourselves silly

It's a classic manoeuvre: take your date to see a scary film so you can put a protective arm around them and enjoy a cuddle. It's not the most romantic way to get close but it definitely works! Instead of heading to the cinema though, take a haunted walk through the streets of London. The Alleyways and Shadows Old City Ghost Walk is a great way to traverse the spookier side of London while gripping onto your partner. The route takes you through abandoned churches, haunted buildings and creepy alleyways.
