Top 7 places to share an ice cream

Top 7 places to share an ice cream

From traditional vanilla to exotic lychee, we’ve picked the top spots around the globe to share a scoop of ice cream. So get romantic this summer and feed each other a spoonful!

Did you know that in the USA July is National Ice Cream Month? You might not live Stateside, but whatever country you happen to be in, there's never an excuse needed to celebrate our favourite iced treat!

1. Gelatorino, London

If you're currently revelling in the unexpected British heat wave, head to Gelatorino (near Covent Garden) for an authentic Italian gelato. Made fresh on the premises every day, you can watch the enviably skilled "gelataio" - or ice cream makers - as they whip up their creamy masterpieces. Enjoy a Zabaglione, based on the traditional Italian Marsala wine recipe or a Croccante - a delicious milk cream with crunchy pieces of almond croccante. If sorbet is more your thing Gelatorino also sell a good selection.

Where: 2, Russell Street, London

2. Ed's Real Scoop, Toronto

Drawing crowds that queue for blocks, Ed's Real Scoop has been the go-to ice cream shop in Toronto for over ten years. Inspired by his Mum's homemade sweets, Ed's creations include Burnt Marshmallow, Salted Caramel and the mysteriously named 'Donatella Rocks' (hazelnut and chocolate swirl), all of which can be enjoyed in a sugar cone, waffle cone or an indulgent chocolate cup. And if those flavours aren't enough to entice you try the gelato, sorbet or frozen yoghurt, the latter being a healthier option.

Where: 2224 Queen Street East, Toronto

3. Cremeria Funivia, Bologna, Italy

We can't talk about ice cream without mentioning the country that produces some of the best stuff in the world. Cremeria Funivia in Bologna is another crowd pleaser but well worth the wait. Their ice cream is whipped on a continuous loop throughout the day meaning it's always fresh and full of taste. The shop sells a mouth-watering display of sorbets, granitas, ice cream cakes and fresh-fruit lolly pops. Flavour wise they sell all the traditional Italian ones that you would expect, plus the summery 'Cavour' - a blend of pastry and lemons from the Amalfi coast. Buon appetito!

Where: 158 Via Porrettana and 1 Piazza Cavour, Bologna

4. Raimo, Paris

Raimo is one of the oldest ice cream shops in Paris, and one of the best. Originally opened in 1947 by The Raimondo family, immigrants from Italy who arrived in France at the beginning of the 20th century, the original shop has sat in the same position for over 60 years, with four other branches dotted around the city. Raimo pride themselves on quality, fresh ingredients meaning the ices on offer change with the season. Expect deliciously different offerings like Banana Sorbet and Almond Milk.

Where: 63 Boulevard de Reuilly, Paris (main café)

5. Murphy's, Dingle, Ireland

It might not be synonymous with Ireland, but Murphy's (pictured) shows that ice cream from the Emerald Isle can hold its own against the Italian masters. Their ice creams contain no artificial ingredients or preservatives and the best part is that their flavours are designed to go together - meaning you can make heavenly combinations like Chocolate and Whiskey or Raspberry and Kerry Cream. The guys at Murphy's also like to spice things up with more adventurous flavours including: Goat's Cheese and Caramelised Shallot; Granny's Christmas Pudding and Green Pea and Mint. The "worst flavour we ever made" was Smoked Salmon. Maybe give that one a miss!

Where: Strand Street, Dingle, Co. Kerry

6.  The Original Chinatown Ice Cream Factory, New York City

Based in the heart of Chinatown, The Original Chinatown Ice Cream Factory is often referred to as an unofficial landmark of the neighbourhood. Serving the masses since 1978, the family-run shop creates exotic Asian flavours like Lychee and Red Bean, as well as non-Asian treats like Sea Salt Caramel and Chocolate Oreo. With fans all around the state, the Chinatown Ice Cream Factory regularly tops the list of best ice cream in New York City. Expect queues.

7. Tepoznieves, Tijuana, Mexico

When an ice cream is trademarked 'Ice Cream of Gods' you know it's got to be good. Situated just over the US border in the Tijuana, there are two Tepoznieves branches to take your pick from. The shop boasts more than 100 flavours and each one is uniquely named and uniquely flavoured - there's the hippy Lullaby Moon (mango, peach, strawberry and walnut), Love Serenade (coconut, pineapple, cherry and walnut) and Snow Xilone (corn cake, mango, peach, cherry, pine nuts and chocolate. If you fancy a little tipple in your ice cream there's a fun selection of gin and tequila or if you want a kick in your cone try one of the eight chilli-infused flavours.
