Top 7 adventure honeymoons

Top 7 adventure honeymoons

What better time to go on an adventure than on your honeymoon? From diving with barracudas to surfing on sand dunes, there’s plenty on offer to spice up your trip

1. Skiing in Innsbruck, Austria

Think skiing destinations and this is the one that will come to mind. Two times host to the Winter Olympics, Innsbruck's nine areas for alpine skiing, snowboarding and cross-country skiing have made it emblematic of the sport. And with a winter menu that also includes tobogganing, ice skating, curling and bobsleigh - not to mention sweeping, romantic views of the Alps - it is the perfect destination for snow-loving couples.

When to go: Mar-May

Where to stay: Try the Basic Hotel in the heart of Innsbruck. Doubles are from £74pn.

2. Diving in Sipadan Island, Malaysia

An underwater Shangri-La for divers, Sipadan Island is packed with marine life. Formed of live corals atop a volcanic cone, it's also a stopover point for migrating birds, like the Grey Imperial pigeon, and was declared an official bird sanctuary in 1933. But that's not the main reason couples flock to the tiny isle. The treacherous Barracuda Point, regularly ranked among the top five dive sites in the world, gives divers the chance to get terrifyingly close to a tornado of these ray-finned fish. Stick around long enough and you'll also see dozens of turtles and, on occasion, hammerhead and white tip sharks.

When to go: Feb-Dec

Where to stay: Scuba Junkie Mabul Beach Resort, on Mabul Island is just a 25min boat ride from Sipadan and in 2012 won a Responsible Tourism Award. Prices are from 100MYR pppn (£19) - including three meals, snacks, tea, coffee and water.

3. Trekking in Mount Toubkal, Africa

Towering at a colossal 13,671ft, Mt Toubkal - known locally as Jebel Toubkal - commands panoramic views of the High Atlas Mountain range. It takes between two days and a week to complete the trek, so it's certainly an energetic way to spend a long romantic weekend! The reward? From the highest peak in North Africa you can gaze down at the vibrant and colourful city of Marrakech from the summit. Why not tag a city break onto the end of your trip?

When to go: Jul-Sep

Where to stay: The isolated Kasbah du Toubkal mountain retreat has a real fairytale feel. A standard double bed and breakfast room is €160pn (£133), minimum two night stay.

4. Climbing in Brazil

Scaling the colossal Sugar Loaf Mountains is no small feat - but it is certainly one of Rio de Janeiro's most exhilarating activities. There are over 60 different ways to reach the towering summits of the two peaks: Pao de Acucar and the shorter Morro do Urca. Each route is tailored to a different skill level, so you and your partner can choose the climb that suits you.

Animal lovers? Discover marmosets on a series of trails which lead to several good climb starting points.

When to go: Sep-Oct

Where to stay: The Rio Guesthouse, at the southern end of Copacabana beach, has double rooms from R$280pn (£73). Minimum three-night stay.

5. Whitewater rafting - Banff

Calling all adrenaline junkies! Nestled amid the lofty peaks of the Canadian Rockies, Lake Louise, in Banff, has the perfect backdrop for whitewater rafting. Surging rivers shoot round the sweeping curves of the mountains, giving you the chance to splash through turbulent and fast-moving rapids. No doubt you'll be exhausted by the end of it - the perfect chance to cash-in on that well deserved cuddle with your loved one.

When to go: Apr-Oct

Where to stay: Deer Lodge is said to be one of the oldest lodges in Banff National Park and has a romantic rooftop hot tub to boot! Doubles from £78pn.

6. Sandboarding - Egypt

Everyone's heard of hitting the waves on a body board, but surfing the giant sand dunes of Egypt? The smooth and steep dunes reach heights of 140 metres, making the Great Sea of Sand, near Siwa, one of the best places for sand surfing in the world. Remaining on the board by the time you reach the base of a dune is a cause for celebration, but, if you do fall off, at least your partner will still love you! It's not just the buzz of the sport that makes the trip worthwhile, but the breathtaking views of the desert landscape as you glide along evoke thoughts of an Aladdin-style romance…

When to go: Early mornings or evenings in the summer

Where to stay: The Taziry Ecolodge Siwa offers double rooms from £68pn.

7. Safari - Masai Mara, Kenya

Kenya's teeming savannahs, flat-topped acacias and lazing predators come together in natural harmony in the Masai Mara game reserve. As a northern extension of Tanzania'a Seregeti, the huge herds of wildebeest and other grazers - arriving between July and October - dominate the park in the same way. Look in one direction and you might spot infamous big cats like lion and cheetah. Glance the other way and you can hope to see elephant, giraffe and possibly, the rare black rhino. Top tip? Head to the upmarket camps to the west for a more exclusive experience.

When to go: May-Oct

Where to stay: Porini Mara Camp is the only safari camp set in Ol Kinyei Conservancy - an exclusive 17,500 acre wilderness. It also happens to be on the doorstep of the Masai Mara. Prices are from $350pppn (£214) for full board.
