Top 5 child-friendly honeymoons

Top 5 child-friendly honeymoons

If you’re honeymooning with mini travellers in tow, it can be hard to choose a destination to keep the little (and big) kids happy. Here’s our pick of the best honeymoons for young families

1. Paris

The city of love is an obvious choice for doey-eyed couples, but it also makes a great honeymoon spot for families. Start your trip in Montmartre, Paris' famous artist's corner and pick a café for breakfast in the main square - you can enjoy some people watching and the romance of a Parisianpetit dejeuner, while children will be impossibly happy that eating bread dipped in hot chocolate is allowed at 9am.

For wide-open spaces head to the Tuileries Garden, which is one of the most child-friendly spots in the city and also one of the most exhilarating. Kids will enjoy the built-in trampolines, pony rides and carousel, while you can enjoy sweeping views of the elaborate park and the rest of Paris.

Many of the major monuments like the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre can be a nightmare for children due to lengthy queues, but the Notre Dame Cathedral has a rose-filled park to play in - leave an adult in the queue and let the kids run around. Once you've made your way inside and clambered to the roof, the views that spread over Paris are inimitably romantic and the plethora of gargoyles provide a fun spotting game for the little ones.

2. House swap

Worried about sharing a cramped hotel room with your kids on honeymoon? Then a house swap could be the perfect option for you. The best part is you can literally go anywhere in the world and be surrounded by home comforts and plenty of adult breathing space. There are many websites offering house-swapping services such as Home Base and Home Exchange and all you have to pay for are the flights to your new temporary home. Simply agree on the length of stay and the finer details (such as swapping cars) with the family you are intending to exchange with, and you'll be away on your honeymoon in no time!

If you're uncomfortable at the thought of having another family stay in your home, Trusted Housesitters offer 'assignments' where you can stay in a house free of charge in exchange for looking after the home and sometimes pets too. You don't need to swap your own house and you can search for assignments worldwide.

3. Amsterdam

This friendly and quirky city is wonderful for children and especially great for art lovers and history buffs: it's also the cycling capital of the world so a family honeymoon to Amsterdam is definitely an active one. 60% of all trips in the picturesque city are made by bike and thanks to the lack of motor traffic it's a fun way to see the sights with the kids. Meandering along the maze of canals on the 400km of dedicated cycle paths is a fun and quaint family activity - just make sure you stick to the signs and signals.

After working up an appetite, take the kids for a unique cooking experience at Kinderkookkafe, where they can don an apron and a chef's hat before cooking up a storm in the kitchen. From chocolate cake to cookies and pizza to sandwiches, it's a fun way to keep the children entertained and you enjoy being cooked for too!

A romantic boat trip is also a great option in Amsterdam, and children will enjoy the excitement of sailing around the winding waterways. If the weather is good, take an open-top cruise - if you opt for a smaller vessel like the Blue Sky Boat you can traverse the narrower canals and enjoy a more private experience.

4. South Africa

Luxury accommodation and unbridled views of the grassy plains of ancient Africa, the Shamwari Game Reserve, near Port Elizabeth, combines colonial romanticism with safari excitement. With a dedicated 'Kids on Safari' scheme, loved-up newlyweds can let the staff whisk the children away to enjoy a visit to the Big Cat Rescue Centre, Shamwari Animal Rehabilitation Centre and various other activities, while enjoying their own sunset safari or a romantic spa experience.

Babysitters are also available for hire should you wish to head out for an intimate dinner, and bedrooms in the luxury colonial-style lodges are all separate.

5. Copenhagen

'Wonderful, wonderful Copenhagen', sang Hollywood's Hans Christian Andersen, and he hit the nail on the head - Denmark's exciting capital makes a perfect blend of romance for the adults and fun for the kids. Take to the cycle lanes as the locals do and explore the city by bicycle. Hiring a bike in the city couldn't be easier and it's very cheap to do so - try Københavns Cykelbørs where you can hire children's bikes and bicycles with children's seats for as little as 75kr for the day.

Enjoy all the fun of the fairground at the grand Tivoli Gardens, whose old-fashioned carousel, rickety roller coasters and sky-high swings have been entertaining children since 1843. Let the kids enjoy the thrills of the rides while you and your partner enjoy the beautiful landscape gardens and live music at the bandstand.

Lego fans are also well catered for - take an overnight trip to the Danish offering of Legoland for a building bonanza all the family will enjoy. Located around a 2.5hr drive from Copenhagan, there's plenty to get involved in.
