Top 10 beaches in the world

TripAdvisor has unveiled its best beaches for 2014. Honeymooners, take note!

Summer is on the horizon and the time to plan your romantic beach bum breaks, sand-filled honeymoons and hideaway holidays is now. Travel review website TripAdvisor has made the decision of where to throw down your towel even easier by announcing the top beaches in the world - as voted for by its users.

Budget-conscious Brits will be pleased to hear that a Welsh beach has made the top 10, while, unsurprisingly, Australia, Brazil and Puerto Rico feature in the list's top five - all of which were announced yesterday (18 March). Here's a countdown of the top 10…

10. Playa Norte, Isla Mujeres, Mexico

With golden sands and aquamarine waters, the sleepyPlaya Norte(North Beach) is one of the best beaches in Central America - worthy of a top 10 spot in this countdown. It stretches along the north side of the island where the sea is shallow: perfect for a couples snorkelling session (the lagoon next to the Avalon Hotel is a particularly good spot). Expect yellow butterfly fish, stingrays and parrotfish.

9. Rhossili Bay, Swansea, UK

Last year Rhossili Bay was voted the 10th best beach in the world. But with its rugged coves and causeways, Dylan Thomas roots and hilly downs overhead, we can see why it has crept up the ranks and claimed ninth place. Far and away the most popular beach on the Gower Peninsula, Rhossili is an idyllic retreat for couples and honeymooners alike. Why not walk hand-in-hand across the golden sands at sunset…?

When to go? July-Sept

8. Lanikai Beach, Kailua, Hawaii

Lanikai, or the 'heavenly sea', offers warm waters, cool trade winds and peace in abundance. Its pristine sands are a local favorite among many Kailuans - but it's one Hawaiian secret that we're just desperate to share with you newlyweds! And if you're both into watersports, its beach coves and inlets are made for kayaking and surfing.

When to go? Year-round

7. Anse Lazio, Praslin Island, Seychelles

Conjure up an image of the perfect beach paradise and chances are you're thinking of Anse Lazio. One of the most photographed beaches in the world, its name sounds deliciously lethargic - and in reality it is just that. Bordered by towering palms on one side, and the clear turquoise of the Indian Ocean on the other, it's one beach that has managed to stay quiet, even in the peak months.

When to go? Year-round

6. Playa de ses Illetes, Formentera, Balearic Islands, Spain

Trust us when we say there's more to Spain than the brash Benidorm. Playa de ses Illetes, on the tiny island of Formentera, is a case and point. Accessible only by ferry, Formentera is blissfully underdeveloped and this beach is equally as untouched. The shores seem infinite, the waters ripe for plunging into, and the sun scorching.

When to go? Year-round

5. Whitehaven Beach, Whitsunday Island, Australia

Unique Honeymoons knows exactly why the swirling sands of Whitehaven Beach have made the top five. Its mysterious ever-changing patterns are a majestic sight, stretching for 7km along Whitsunday Island, the largest in this Australian archipelago.

When to go? Year-round

4. Rabbit Beach, Lampedusa, Islands of Sicily, Italy

Down from first place in 2013, Rabbit Beach is clinging to the top five thanks to its remote and inaccessible ivory sands and pool-like waters. An unspoiled nature reserve, the Sicilian inlet can only be accessed by boat and is one of just a handful of places in the Med where loggerhead sea turtles lay their eggs.

When to go? May-Sept

3. Playa Flamenco, Culebra, Puerto Rico

There are few beaches - especially in the Caribbean - that allow you to camp on their soft sands, let alone encourage you to do so, which is what makes Puerto Rico's Playa Flamenco so interesting. What better way to spend your honeymoon then sleeping under the stars in the tropical heat? The beach is also a great spot for snorkeling and, if you simply want to relax, sunbathing.

When to go? Year-round

2. Grace Bay, Providenciales, Turks and Caicos

With a long, lively coral reef, rich in aquatic life, Grace Bay is a haven for nature-loving couples and a worthy runner-up. You can even spot schools of fish from the shore when you're taking a leisurely stroll together across the sand…

When to go? Year-round

1. Baia do Sancho, Fernando de Noronha, Brazil

And finally; the number one. With its lush overhanging cliffs, clad with flora and flauna, Baia do Sancho is a mecca for beach-lovers. Flung just off the Brazilian coast, the UNESCO-listed Fernando de Noronha offers calm, reflective waters that allow snorkellers (and even paddlers!) to observe exotic fish and turtles in abundance. Reaching its best beach, an almost other-worldly paradise, is no small feat though: visitors must descend a vertigo-inducing staircase before they can relax on the best beach on earth. If your partner has a fear of heights, perhaps opt for the runner-up.
