Ice rinks

Winter heralds the launch of London's many outdoor ice rinks. From 'Eyeskate' -beneath the bright fairy lights of the London Eye - to the structure at the historic Tower of London, which is nestled inside its ancient moat. But it's the Natural History Museum with its magical rink-side backdrop that wins the contest. It's not easy keeping toasty, especially while you're on a 1,000-square-metre ice rink, but a dedicated café and bar - not to mention free (indoor) museums that you can visit before or after your skating session - can really help keep the cold chill at bay.

Entry is from £11.50pp. Until Sunday 22 December, the rink is open 10am-9pm Mon-Weds, 10am-10pm Thurs-Fri, 9am-10pm on Saturdays, and 9am-9pm on Sundays. It is closed on Christmas Day but is open 9am-9pm from 23 to 24 December, 11am-9pm on Boxing Day.

Boat trips

Snuggle up to your new spouse or partner, drifting under the iconic London Bridge on a romantic boat ride down the Thames. Both sides of the riverbank are peppered with sights to see, such as Big Ben or the vibrant Southbank. And despite the iciness of the water below, you'll be kept safe in the confines of this heated boat - unless you fancy venturing on deck of course!

There are dozens of tours available when booking through the reputable Thames River Tours. The Thames Circular Cruise (£11pp) runs daily and glides through the water for about an hour, passing by the icons of central London, accompanied by commentary from a knowledgeable tour guide. Or for a more romantic option, why not try the Thames Sunday Lunch Jazz Cruise (from £48pp)? Enjoy a refreshing set menu, relaxing atmosphere and stunning river views while listening to the soothing, dreamy sounds of jazz. Places are limited on this 2.5-hour tour, so it makes for a more intimate experience.

Afternoon tea

London is synonymous with luxury afternoon tea. And with more than 100 hotels, eateries and estates to choose from, you can understand why this quintessentially British activity is a popular choice for a romantic afternoon in the city.

The name that most people remember is the five-star Claridges. In this art deco establishment, sweet pastries and savoury treats are served on fine china and accompanied by a choice of about 40 different teas - from regional English blends to rare, herbal infusions. Never before have finger sandwiches been so up market. Given its popularity, the experience at Claridges can be quite busy and booking in advance is recommended. That being said, the Mayfair hotel's offering is the epitome of the perfect afternoon tea and a great way to inject a bit of opulence into your honeymoon.

Prices range from £50-74pp.

Lapland UK

We know what you're thinking, Lapland is in Finland, right? Wrong. Venture a few miles out of London - jump on a train from Paddington to Windsor (from 26mins) before venturing to nearby Ascot - and you'll discover the UK has its very own version. Lapland UK is the perfect Christmas experience if you and your new spouse love to get immersed in the festive period. It's an even better experience if you've already got kids too! Meet husky dogs, elves, reindeer and of course, the jolly old chap himself - Father Christmas - before trying out ice skating and toy building. Or why not grab a steaming cup of hot chocolate to keep both you and your partner warm? Located in the depths of an enchanting forest, it makes for an unforgettable experience that is considerably cheaper than a trip to Finland.

Tickets range from £45-£75pp and must be bought in advance.
