Romantic things to do in Queensland

Queensland is Australia's playground. With a tropical climate, stunning beaches and the Great Barrier Reef, there is plenty to explore with your partner

Discover the Daintree

The protected World Heritage Daintree Rainforest is over 130 million years old. With several ecolodges around, there is plenty that you can enjoy together here. The forest is filled with things to see, from waterfalls to the elusive and beautiful Cassowary. Most ecolodges also have an in-house spa when you can lay back and relax together whilst being pampered from your long day of exploration. (Fancy staying in the jungle? The Great Barrier Reef is one of the world's natural wonders. Filled with species of tropical fish, shark, stingray, dugong, turtles, dolphins and sea snakes, there are over 300 types of marine life for you to see. Either diving or snokelling will give you an experience you will remember together for the rest of your lives. To make it even more romantic, why not explore the famous Heart Reef together?

Queensland is witness to the migration of Humpback Whales and their young between July and November, and numerous other whale species can also be seen throughout the year. Take to the sea at Hervey Bay and watch as these majestic animals fluke and spray. There are plenty of tour and charter companies around Hervey Bay that you can pick from to find the perfect boat trip for the two of you to snuggle up on.

Four Mile Beach in Port Douglas is anyone's idea of paradise. Lined with coconut trees, it is renowned for its tranquil beauty and is the perfect spot for a romantic walk to watch the sun go down. The clear glittering waters of the coral sea will be your companion and with the warm climate, it is the perfect setting for any time of year.

Fraser Island (Flickr ;kevgibbo)Get sandy

Fraser Island is the world's largest sand island and is home to rainforest, lakes and dingoes. Indian head is a great place to watch the whales from, and if you are lucky you may even spot some turtles. The lakes of Fraser Island are beautiful and cooling, so relax and take a dip; but don't swim in the sea as the waters are a notorious tiger shark breeding ground, and you could end up going home without a limb. Or a partner.

Brisbane (Flickr ;Sean C90)Make mine a cosmopolitan

Brisbane is Queensland's capital and it is the biggest city in the 'sunshine state'. Have a wander down South Bank and take the plunge at South Bank Beach, the only beach in Australia found in the middle of a city. The calm waters are free and are surrounded by some great shops and even better restaurants. For a panoramic view of the city at night, head to the Wheel of Brisbane. There are plenty of good bars in the city and Fortitude Valley, where you can sit and enjoy a cocktail or two together afterwards.

The expansive rugged desert landscape is awe-inspiringly mysterious, and a great place to be alone together. Exploring the outback will take you back to the nation's cultural heritage as you enter into the Australian pioneering spirit. With rocky outcrops to scale, dinosaur fossils to discover, wetlands to explore and sand dunes to surf, there is plenty to see. The night's skies come alive in this part of the world. With no light pollution, you can snuggle up to gaze at the star-dusted sky as you have never seen it before.

Balloon (Flickr ;edupov)Reach for the sky

With some of the world's most spectacular scenery, Queensland is worth seeing from the sky. Gaze down from a balloon or aircraft over the turquoise sea and white sand beaches that disappear into rainforest or an expanse of nothingness. For the really adventurous couple, why not get your adrenaline pumping and try out sky diving? There is no setting more beautiful in which to watch the horror on your partner's face as you tumble towards earth!

Ride (Flickr ;jonisanowl)Thrill seek

Queensland is host to Australia's best theme and adventure parks. Get Wet 'n' Wild at the country's biggest water theme park before heading for some thrills at Warner Bros. Movie World for some exhilarating rides. If you fancy something different, the Gold Coast has plenty of other attractions on offer, from Go Karting and crazy golf to Aussie Waterballs, where you can bash carefree into your partner and try to keep your feet.
