Romantic things to do in London this August Bank Holiday

Romantic things to do in London this August Bank Holiday

London is full of things to do; Alexandra Gregg shows you how to inject a bit of romance into your August bank holiday weekend

1. Camden Beach

Beat your belle or beau at a game of ping-pong on a makeshift beach just off London's Northern Line. The 150 tonnes of sand that makes up Camden Beach - and its pop-up promenade of beach huts, restaurants, bars and gaming amusements - will give you that seaside vibe, even if you can't escape the city. What better way to spend your long weekend than at the beach?

2. Model Market, Lewisham

Attention food lovers! The people behind London's 'Street Feast' have transferred their tasty eats to a 1950s covered market in Lewisham. With the help of 10 micro-dinners, they've injected new life into this once-abandoned warehouse, offering a cracking cocktail of great street food, drinks and music. The cuisine line-up is as follows: Breddos Tacos, Cheeky Italian, Dogtown Hotdogs, Hank's Po' Boys, Killer Tomato, Mama's Jerk, Rola Wala, Sambal Shiok, SE Brownie Bar, SmokeStak BBQ and Yum Bun. Choose from a range of outdoor and indoor eating spaces too, or you can enjoy your grub on the market rooftop at sunset.

3. Notting Hill Carnival

It's back, and more vibrant than ever! You and your loved one can experience the bright colours, sights and sounds from all around the globe at Notting Hill Carnival - it will feel like you're on holiday without even leaving the confines of London. Running Sunday 24 August, to Monday 25 August, music is the beating heart of the festival, with traditional and contemporary sounds filling the air for miles around. An eclectic mix of steel bands, reggae, R&B and funk - to name a few - is the highlight and is showcased at a parade from the Great Western Road on Bank Holiday Monday.

4. Brief Encounter with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Southbank

David Lean's timeless tale of a whirlwind love affair captured the hearts of romantics everywhere when it was released into post-war Britain. Now, with a little help from the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Brief Encounter has been reinvigorated. Watch the emotional tryst play out on the big screen of Royal Festival Hall, accompanied by live music. As the film centerpiece of the Southbank Centre's 'Festival of Love' it will be a truly memorable experience. You can even make a night of it by dressing up in character, sampling cocktails in the foyer from 6pm, and participating in a workshop on 'How to Speak Posh' like the two lovers do in the film.

Screenings are this Friday, 22 August, and Friday 29. Tickets start from £20p/p. For film-lovers of a different kind, there's also a sing-a-long showing of Dirty Dancing on Saturday, 23 August.

5. Stargazing, Greenwich

Star-crossed lovers should head over to Greenwich this Bank Holiday. Discover the mysteries of the universe at the Royal Observatory - London's only public planetarium. Shows run daily from 11am-5pm and are a great way to escape any bad weather, while taking a wondrous tour of the galaxy with one of the institute's expert astronomers. Staring up at the stars with your loved one at your side, talk about romantic.

Tickets are £6.50 for adults, £5.50 for concessions.
