Romantic summer solstice proposals

Romantic summer solstice proposals

The summer solstice is a truly celestial event, so why not make the most of this magical opportunity by getting down on one knee on 21 June?

What's not to love about the summer solstice? The longest day of the year (in the northern hemisphere, at least) means more illuminated hours for exploring! Folklorists reckon that midsummer is a magical time to engage in relationship rituals too. So while you're off traversing the globe with the druids on 21 June, basking in as much sunshine as you can manage, why not pop the question? Alexandra Gregg has compiled three proposals that you'll never forget…

Romancing the Stone… henge

England

It may have once been a site of ritualistic slaughter and druid worship, but Stonehenge has also been a romance magnet for decades. Spend the night drumming and dancing with your belle or beau before greeting the sunrise over this Neolithic icon. With the standing stones framed by an amber sky as your backdrop, there are few places more atmospheric or romantic to ask your partner for their hand in marriage. Assuming they've said yes, you can complete the experience by glamping in nearby Stonehenge Campsite.

Dancing in the sunlight

Brazil, Sweden

Taking your loved one in your arms while dancing is both heartfelt and romantic. Head to Brazil's Festa Junina (June Festival, in honour of John the Baptist), where locals dance thequadrilha. This square dance features formations of couples moving around a mock wedding, with a faux bride and groom in the centre. But why should it be a big hoax? Make that wedding a reality by issuing your proposal midway through the number.

Or visit Sweden and join the locals in frolicking around a maypole adorned with handmade wreaths. Plus, you can drink plenty of schnapps before plucking up the courage to ask that big question…

Listening to the music of love

France, Egypt, Australia

Move over Marvin Gaye, there's a new romance ruler in town, and its name is Fête de la Musique. Set up in France in the 1980s, the festival is a musical celebration of the solstice. Its eclectic selection of live bands and artists has become so popular that the event is now held in over 100 cities worldwide, including Egypt and Australia. Simply put: there's something for everyone, offering the chance for you and your loved one to hear plenty of romantic songs. What better way to put you in the mood for a marriage proposal?
