Romantic London on a budget

Romantic London on a budget

With an extravagant food scene and world-class shopping it’s easy to stretch the purse strings in England’s cool capital; so here’s our handy guide for cash-strapped couples

1. Visit a museum

London is literally bursting with free museums in every direction, meaning whatever your interest you're sure to find yourself happily engrossed at one. Learn something new at the Science Museum or visit the Natural History Museum and gawp at amazing artefacts. To appreciate free art and culture stroll hand-in-hand around the British Museum and for design lovers, the Victoria and Albert is the place to go.

2. Catch some free live music

There's nothing better than cuddling up to your loved one and enjoying some beautiful live music, especially if it's free! Head over to the Royal Festival Hall at the heart of the Southbank Centre on a Friday evening and enjoy everything from jazz and blues to folk. Make sure you take the singing glass elevator: as it moves, the voices of the Southbank Centre's Voicelab choir rise or fall in time with the journey.

The Royal Opera House also hosts lunchtime recitals on Mondays at 1pm; simply turn up on the day to enjoy music by rising stars, members of the orchestra at the Royal Opera House and the Royal Opera Chorus.

3. Wander the markets

London is famous for its vibrant and eclectic markets and even if you don't have any spare pennies, wandering the labyrinth of stalls overflowing with wares is a fun way to spend a lazy afternoon. The city's most popular open-air market, Camden, is an assault on the senses; a tangle of paths lead you past alternative clothing, vintage homeware and just about every ethnicity of food you can think of. If you're after some snazzy furniture with a retro kick head to Portobello Road antiques market, while Old Spitalfields market in trendy Shoreditch has rolling events every weekend including themed Saturdays. The chaotic, bustling hub of Brick Lane market is a haven for those seeking second-hand trinkets - be sure to grab an authentic Jewish bagel for some shopping sustenance while you're there. For foodie fun, Borough market has over 70 stalls with sellers hawking everything from cheese to curry.

4. Get a bird's eye view

Skip paying the best part of £20 on the London Eye and get yourself to the top of Primrose Hill: you'll get unimpeded views of the city plus it's absolutely free. Pack a picnic and take advantage of the park's position north of Regent's Park, which gives you a lovely view of London Zoo below, as well as the City in the distance and Canary Wharf to the east. Gaze out at the Houses of Parliament, St. Paul's Cathedral and The Shard as you enjoy a romantic haven above the buzzing city.

5. Head to a stately home

The grand neo-classical beauty of Somerset House is the perfect place for a romantic date. Once a Tudor palace, Somerset House is now packed full of exciting music, film and fashion exhibitions (many are free) and hosts a variety of open-air concerts and films. In spring and summer months, the expansive courtyard transforms into a watery wonder when 55 fountains playfully dance and in the winter the space turns in to one of London's most popular ice-staking rinks (Nov-Jan; tickets from £7.50). For the ultimate romantic experience, head to the rink at nightfall when the house is illuminated in a riot of colour.
