Romancing the shore: top 5 activities on the Amalfi coast

Romancing the shore: top 5 activities on the Amalfi coast

Dramatic coastline, rugged cliffs, idyllic towns and lush lemon trees: this is Italy’s Amalfi coast – one of the most romantic places in the world

It's easy to see why the Amalfi coast is Italy's number one tourist destination and, arguably, Europe's most breathtaking stretch of coastline. Tumbling cliffs give way to glistening seas, overlooked by precariously balanced houses that cling to the rock side. Lemon groves fragrance the air and every turn brings you to another legendary destination - Positano, Ravello and Sorrento all sit along the coastline.

But with breathtaking views come the crowds, which is why our top five activities take you a little off the tourist trail but still pack in the romance.

1.  Take a cooking class

They say the best way to a man's heart is through his stomach, but that's no excuse for the men not to return the favour! Take a cookery class with your loved one and learn some new tricks at the famous Mamma Agata cookery school, perched high in the hills of Ravello. As a young girl, Agata cooked in luxurious Ravello villas for movie stars like Elizabeth Taylor and Humphrey Bogart; today she teaches classic Italian cooking from her home. Using ingredients grown in her plentiful garden, Mamma Agata will teach you how to whip up a culinary storm in no time. For around €200 for four hours, you get tuition, an interpreter, note pad and pens and lunch on the terrace.

But if the heat of the kitchen gets too much for you, head over to Sorrento and the Gelateria David, where in a 45-minute class (€10) you'll learn the best techniques for making a hand-made gelato. The best part is the sampling at the end!

2. Charter a boat

What better way to explore the coast than from the sea? Charter your own boat and enjoy an intimately romantic voyage stopping off wherever takes your fancy. Try Amalfi Coast Yacht that has a fleet of luxury motor yachts to choose from and sails to Capri, Ischia, Procida, Amalfi or the Sorrento Coast. You have the freedom to decide how long you want to drop anchor for and there's no other guests onboard, meaning this is the ultimate honeymoon experience. Take a picnic and some Italian wine and soak up the sparkling sea in a hidden bay.

3. Watch the sunset

A sunset is a beautiful sight to share wherever you are in the world, but the magic of the Amalfi coast at dusk is something completely different. As the light fades head to Positano, which has a real romantic allure, and find a spot on Fornillo beach, which is less crowded than Marina Grande. Sit back, relax and enjoy the cascade of red and orange light that is truly astonishing.

4. Picnic in Ravello

A 30 minute bus ride from Amalfi and suspended high on a cliff top, Ravello offers magnificent views of the sea and countryside, as well as concerts and musical events year-round. Less hectic than Amalfi, Ravello is peaceful and spectacularly placed for a panoramic picnic. Stay off the beaten path and weave your way through luscious vineyards where you'll find lots of places to sit and eat. After you've gorged on as much ciabatta and mozzarella as your stomach will allow, make the worthwhile visit to the gardens of Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone. Yes, they're both in the guidebooks but make breathtaking vantage points over the Mediterranean.

5. Hike the Path of the Gods

Sentiero degli dei, or 'the Path of the Gods', is aptly named. Stretching between Agerola and Positano, the relatively gentle path drinks in sweeping views and spectacular scenery. The route is best taken downhill from the top of Agerola to Positano (although more adventurous walkers could try the route uphill), as the walk is less strenuous. To get there take a bus from Amalfi town which takes you direct to the small mountain village of Bomerano (a part of Agerola) where the path begins. You can also pick it up from Praiano if you happen to be closer. Allow around four hours and watch your step - parts of the route can be quite narrow and hang dizzly over the edge.
