New York’s most romantic springtime activities

New York’s most romantic springtime activities

Where better to put a spring in your step this April than New York? The Big Apple offers abundant romance for couples before summer – from walks to Broadway

Temperatures are soaring, flowers are blooming and the action is just beginning: spring is the perfect time for a romantic break in Manhattan. And while this mighty city - with its canyons of skyscrapers - may seem daunting at first, it offers 10,000km of streets that are bursting with things to see and do. But where do you begin…?

Amble through Central Park

Given New York's scale and reputation, it can be hard to know where to start on a springtime visit. The magnificent Central Park, taking up 843 acres of this lively metropolis, offers a delicate introduction to the city. Couples can take a stroll past blossoming trees and trickling fountains with the most recognised city in the world as their backdrop. Mid-April, the park is awash with cherry blossom and magnolias, transformed into a tranquil retreat where the sound of honking cabs is drowned out by a cacophony of majestic birdcalls. Best of all? It's completely free. Unless you partner treats you to a pedi-cab or horse carriage ride, that is. Prices start from $60 (£30, 30 minutes) and $50 (£36, 20 minutes) respectively.

Animal lovers can also visit Central Park Zoo for $18 (£10.80) per adult ($16 if booked online in advance). You'll get the chance to see red pandas, sea lions and the endangered snow leopard.

Declare your love in the (Wide) Open

From 26 April to 1 June, the city's weekend visitors can take in art of all sizes, subjects and media in the Wide Open 5 art show. The completely open gallery sits inside a Civil War-era warehouse on the Red Hook waterfront in Brooklyn. Its enormous space means it exhibits equally huge work, from artists all across the country. Whether you and your partner love oil or acrylic, photography or pastels, sculptures or fabric, there's something for everyone.

The show is open every Saturday and Sunday, 2-6pm. Visit www.wideopenartshow.com for more information.

Make a romantic connection on Brooklyn Bridge

The bridge (and its romantic arches) is one of the city's best free attractions. You can drive across it, walk it or bike it. A 2km path, elevated above the traffic, is reserved for pedestrians and cyclists, offering a great opportunity for lovers to walk hand-in-hand while sightseeing - enjoying this romantic city as it blossoms. The path can be reached from the Brooklyn side at Tillary and Adams Streets or via a staircase in Prospect Street, between Cadman Plaza East and West. From the Manhattan side, access to the walkway is from near City Hall Park (although the views aren't as good walking in this direction!)

Immerse yourself in the beauty of Broadway

All the glitter and excitement of Broadway is right on your doorstep - a must activity for any couple. With so many stars from TV and movies, now is the time to come and see these celebrated shows. After Midnighthas welcomed a flurry of stars, beginning with Toni Braxton and Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds and followed by Vanessa Williams, singer, actress and former Miss America.Matildais reinvigorated with fresh blood: Matt Harrington and Christopher Sieber as Mr Wormwood and Miss Trunchbull, respectively.Wickedhas also seen new cast members, including two-time Tony Award nominee Mary Testa assuming the role of Madame Morrible.

Several shows, from revivals to brand new scripts, launched last month too.Les Miserablesreturned on 23 March for its 2014 run of this famed show, while Hollywood hit turned Broadway show,Rocky the Musical, officially opened on 13 March. Tickets vary in price.
