I want to stay in a...lighthouse

Waves lashing, wind whipping – have a honeymoon at what feels like the end of the world

1 The Lighthouse, nr Wellington, New Zealand

Escape the city in this lovely lighthouse for two, which keeps watch over boat-dotted Island Bay. Inside it's crisp and fresh, but the outside's best: retreat to the top floor sitting room for wonderful 360° views of the beach and sparkling waters beyond.

While you're there… Meet the seals at Red Rocks (a short walk); Wellington is just 15 minutes by bus.

From NZ$180 (£89) pn; thelighthouse.net.nz

2 Porer Lighthouse, Porer, Croatia

As remote a romantic getaway as you can get: this 35m-high 19th-century tower sits on the islet of Porer, 2.5km off the cape of Istria. It may take less than a minute to circumambulate your rocky home, but the sunsets are some of the most beautiful on the Adriatic.

While you're there… Swim off the islet or arrange trips to the city of Pula and the island of Unije (renowned for fabulous bays) with local captain Ivan Giotta.

From €69 (£59) pn, two-night min stay; www.lighthouses-croatia.com

3 Harlingen Lighthouse, Harlingen, the Netherlands

After 75 years of faithful service, Harlingen's beam has finally been switched off and the lighthouse turned into a cosy three-floor retreat for two. From high above the old trading town, admire the panoramic view from your bed, squeeze up the steep steps to dine under the original copper dome and watch ships steam into the harbour.

While you're there… Stroll Harlingen's well-preserved 16th- to 18th-century streets then take the ferry to the dunes and cycle lanes of the Frisian Islands.

From €319 (£274) pn; www.vuurtoren-harlingen.nl

4 Wicklow Head Lighthouse, Wicklow, Ireland

Surrounded on three sides by the Irish Sea, this lighthouse has safeguarded the Wicklow coast since 1781. Now run by the Irish Landmark Trust, it's been restored, its six octagonal rooms, metre-thick walls and arched windows a haven for peace-seekers. You need to be nimble, though: there are 109 steps up to the kitchen at the top.

While you're there… Wicklow Town's bars and restaurants are 5km away. The Wicklow Way long-distance walking trail runs to the west.

From €750 (£645) for a long weekend; www.irishlandmark.com

5 Quirpon Lighthouse Inn, Newfoundland, Canada

The waterway overlooked by this lighthouse B&B, lording over little Quirpon Island at Newfoundland's northernmost tip, is known as 'Iceberg Alley' - here, your only neighbours are huge blocks of ice and minke, humpback and killer whales migrating past the windows. After a breathtaking boat tour to the island, enjoy one of Doris's traditional homemade suppers.

While you're there… Explore Newfoundland - from hikes in otherworldly Gros Morne NP to visiting nearby former Viking settlement L'Anse aux Meadows.

From C$325 (£199) pn; http://linkumtours.com
