Escape the ever-increasing prices of the Eurozone and enjoy year-round sunshine, towering peaks and a honeymoon drenched in culture when you head to North Africa, says Alexandra Gregg
For honeymooners seeking a gentle foray into the African continent, Tunisia offers the perfect first taste. A short jaunt over the Med from Italy, this increasingly popular destination takes up just a slither of the Northern coast, Algeria and Libya's much tinier - and much less dramatic - younger brother. And make no mistake, it's a tardis: stuffing a lot into a small package. You can explore the country's Roman roots at El Jem, dive through tunnel reefs in Tabarka and past WWII shipwrecks in Hammamet, or surf across Saharan sands when venturing inland.
Lovers can take in a diverse landscape of salt lakes, jungle-clad mountains and endless desert on a romantic hot air balloon ride, then finish off the day by enjoying a cool pint of beer at Golf Bräu, a German-run micro-brewery in Sousse.
Where to stay? Head to Sousse for a mosaic mix of traditional culture, white sandy beaches and tasty dishes. You can rent out the Marina Kantaoui, overlooking the harbour, from £18pn.
Whether you're a thrill-seeking couple that wants to clamber up Mt Toubkal - the tallest peak in North Africa - or if you prefer to barter over Berber wares at vibrant souks and visit abundant mosques, Morocco has something to enchant everyone. Head to Marrakech and you'll not only discover the country's most fascinating marketplaces, but you can sample flavoured teas on a terrace overlooking Djemaa el-Fna (the city's main square), relax in a public bath (otherwise known as ahamman) or witness a romantic sunset behind the Koutoubia Mosque.
If you fancy a bit of adventure head to the Ourika Valley, 45 minutes from the city, where a wealth of activities is available: whitewater rafting, tubing, kayaking and canyoning, quad-biking, desert tours, mountain-biking and ballooning.
Where to stay? The comfortable Luxueux Appart is in the heart of Marrakech and sleeps up to six people. Prices from £81pn.
Dive into an underwater safari in the Red Sea. More than 800 species of fish inhabit these Egyptian waters, darting between luminescent brain coral and floating weeds, undeterred by the presence of you and your partner as you snorkel overhead. From the masked butterfly fish to the springer's dottyback, the list of marine life endemic to these shallow shores is massive, and many make their home just a few hundred from the shore. Ever seen the Disney Pixar movieFinding Nemo? Well you'll find anemonefish by the bucket load right here.
For adrenaline junkies: think camel rides, quad-biking or stargazing in the desert with the Bedouins. And with FCO restrictions relaxed on travel to Luxor, you can sail the Nile from the Valley of the Kings down to the infamous Pyramids of Giza.
Where to stay? Dahab is a quieter resort, away from the tourist trappings of Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh. Try the Villa Sarda apartments, just ten minutes outside Dahab's centre and with views looking out onto the ocean. From £64pn.
