Honeymoon glamping in South & South-East Asia

Honeymoon glamping in South & South-East Asia

Going camping but fancy a bit more romance? Upgrade your tenting holiday to a ‘glamping’ experience in Laos, Cambodia, Borneo, Cambodia, Sri Lanka or Thailand

Ankle-deep in sludge, huddling in windswept caravans and deploying wellies and a rain mac on a daily basis: camping can be fun, but it's not always the most luxurious experience - especially on your honeymoon. Newlyweds need not panic if they're desperate to get outdoors and into a tent this summer though… Nick Pulley, founder of Selective Asia, has picked out some of the best glamping sites in South & South-East Asia.

Let's face it; you're much less likely to need a brolly in Laos, Cambodia, Malaysian Borneo, Cambodia, Sri Lanka or Thailand than you are in Britain. Check out these six ultimate glamping experiences…

Shangri Lao Classic Explorer Camp

Luang Prabang, Laos

The Shangri Lao Camp not only provides a rewardingly personal elephant experience, but does so in style. Honeymooners take note: riverside safari tents come with four-poster beds, fixed wooden flooring, and an en-suite bathroom with a tub or whirlpool bath - not to mention beautiful views of the river and surrounding tropical landscape. And, despite being fringed by dense jungle, this camp even has a pool. Its owners are big on conservation too, and the site provides much-needed work for locals.

Camping among Angkor-era temples

Cambodia

The sheer romantic adventure of setting up camp amid some of Cambodia's atmospheric Khmer temples is hard to beat. "Angkor Wat can, of course, get crowded so we like to plunge off into the wilderness to discover the many other Angkor-era temples," Nick explains. Selective Asia's Angkor Camping Safari starts in Angkor, using expert guides to avoid the crowds, then goes on to explore elegant 10th-century Banteay Srei, Anlong Ven, Koh Ker, and the hard-to-reach temple of Preah Khan in the ruined city of Kampong Svay. At night, you and your loved one will set up camp near the temples. Your durable lightweight tents are carried by a local team of camping specialists who also set up a mobile loo, shower, and a small generator for cooking.

Iban Longhouses & Riverside Shelter

Batang Ai National Park, Malaysian Borneo

Exploring rainforest rivers on a handmade raft and camping in bamboo shelters is all part of the adventure in Batang Ai National Park - great for thrillseeking couples! A typical journey includes two nights in different Iban longhouses and one in the shelter. It may not be glamping, but offers incredible experiences for the adventurous. It's not one for the squeamish either - you'll be washing in the river, weeing under trees, and sometimes even dining on freshly-hunted forest animals, but if you're looking for a real cultural experience on your first holiday as Mr & Mrs: this is it.

4 Rivers Floating Lodge

Tatai, Koh Kong, Cambodia

Deep in a forested, mountainous province in Cambodia's southwest, this tiny resort is charming from the outset. After a 10-minute private boat transfer along the Tatai River, the camp opens up before you, showcasing 12 wooden platforms securely tethered to the riverbank, on which sit spacious safari tents. The Lodge has a restaurant and bar, and offers a wonderfully peaceful ambiance where you'll both be lulled to sleep by jungle sounds. Sweeping views of the nearby Cardamom Mountains are spectacular, and couples can go kayaking along the river in tandem, or take a dip in the natural pool.

Mahoora Tented Safari Camps

Various National Parks, Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka's wildlife is astounding. Although the country is still recovering from the civil war, leopard populations are absolutely thriving, and elephants are doing well too. Animal-loving couples can experience them first hand without sacrificing many creature comforts too: try a Mahoora Safari. These eco-camps offer a touch of luxury with expert guides, trackers and on-site naturalists as well as excellent access to Sri Lanka's protected wildlife. The Elite camp offers grandly carpeted, candlelit safari tents with private hot showers - great for going that extra luxurious mile on your honeymoon.

Four Seasons Tented Camp

Chiang Saen, Thailand

Perched on wooden platforms high among the treetops, deep in Thailand's lush Golden Triangle, these Four Seasons tents offer mesmerising views into neighbouring Burma (Myanmar) and Laos. The camp's super-deluxe tents are immaculate, with king size beds, free-standing bathtubs, and private balconies. As if that's not enough for the two of you, there also fine dining facilities, a pool, a traditional open-air spa, a yoga pavilion, and an elephant camp within the 200-acre estate.
