Summit a mountain – Tanzania

A tent, thermals, long-drop loos, no showers – the romance!

A tent, thermals, long-drop loos, no showers - the romance! But conquering a mountain - ideally a really big one - is ideal for an active 'moon. Honest.

"We thought that if we started married life by taking on a huge challenge, then everything else would seem easy," explains honeymooner Sonia Jackson, who climbed Kilimanjaro with Exodus (www.exodus.co.uk). "It was both the best and the worst experience of our lives!"

At 5,895m, Africa's highest mountain is tough - but it's manageable by anyone with a half-decent fitness level and plenty of determination. You either camp or stay in basic shared huts. The 'bathroom' is a bowl of warm water provided by your porters; meals are carb-heavy rations dished up in a chilly tent; the high altitude throbs your head, grabs your breath and whirls your stomach. But, somehow, you will love it.

"Amorous encounters are difficult when you're in a tent wearing three jumpers, it's -20°C outside and you're trussed up in separate sleeping bags," admits Sonia, "but there were plenty of emotional  moments too. Just remember, you're doing this as a team!"

It takes around six or seven days to climb Kili. Afterwards you will be exhausted and elated - and perfectly placed to explore more of northern Tanzania: the wildlife of the Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti are nearby. But Sonia's advice? "Follow it up with some time at a luxury beach resort - you'll need the massage and you've certainly earned it!"
