Feel like you’re in a fairytale – India & Morocco

Whether it’s Arabian Nights exoticism or Brothers Grimm enchantment, some places just exude a kind of magic that makes you feel you’ve been transported to the pages of a children’s book

"Some of the most fairytale-like places I've stayed have been in India," says Jane Anderson, editor of www.101honeymoons.co.uk. "Former forts and maharaja palaces such as Devi Garh (www.deviresorts.in) and Deogarh Mahal (www.deogarhmahal.com) in Rajasthan are magical for their sensory overload and history. At Devi Garh honeymooners can step out of their room to find a lone flautist playing in a candlelit courtyard, and be escorted to a private dining room for dinner on a table covered in marigold petals. At Deogarh Mahal you can sleep in a bejewelled and mirrored room if you book the top Maharana Suite - but have a good look on the website as some of the less expensive deluxe rooms are charming."

You don't have to stay posh to find the fairytale in these parts. Just wandering around Jaisalmer, a city-within-a-fort-within-the-Thar Desert, will provide a bit of magic as you get lost amid the Hindu temples, old havelis(mansions), clock-menders and spice vendors; leave the city on a camel safari to spend a night out under the stars.

"Moroccois another place I'd associate with a fairytale experience," adds Jane. "Stay in a riad tucked away down what looks like a shabby alleyway near the Djemaa el Fna square in Marrakesh: once you're through the wooden door, a mini palace opens up. Try Dar Darma (pictured, www.dardarma.com) for its 300-year-old painted ceilings and leopard-skin rugs."

Fès, further north in Morocco, is more fairytale still, its spaghetti of 9,400 tightly knit alleyways little changed for centuries; stay in a restored traditional home or mini-palace to feel like a royal couple (from €85; fesmedina.com). Otherwise, play Aladdin at Aït Benhaddou, a striking ochre kasbah tumbling down amid the Atlas Mountains, about four-hours' drive from Marrakesh. Many a movie has been filmed amid its warren of clay-brick houses (including Gladiator and Lawrence of Arabia) so it's well preserved, but there are many more atmospherically crumbling examples nearby: take a drive down the Dadès Valley, known as the Valley of 1,000 Kasbahs, for more.
