Honeymoon checklist: the seven 'Ps'

Honeymoon checklist: the seven 'Ps'

Honeymoons are for relaxing – starting your married life together. But sometimes when you’re elbow-deep in paperwork, it’s hard to envisage the tranquility. Check off these seven ‘Ps’ though, and your trip could be stress-free…

Passport

Wherever you honeymoon it's likely you'll need your passport, so be sure to keep it somewhere safe. Secondly, for the blushing brides, make sure the name on your passport matches the name on your airline tickets/insurance etc. This may mean travelling under your maiden name if you're hopping on a flight straight after the wedding ceremony. And our final top tip for passports? Always take a photocopy and keep it separate from the real thing. If you lose your passport you won't be able to travel home with the copy, but having it should speed up the repatriation process.

Paperwork

Nobody likes paperwork (unless they're a little bit bonkers!), but having your insurance, flight tickets, hotel info, visas (if needed) and travel money all in one secure place can save a lot of hassle and faffing about when you're at the airport. Get it all printed off and in order well in advance of your trip and - where possible - take copies of everything/divide any cash between you and your partner.

Packing

Planning to jet off somewhere exotic just hours after you've tied the knot? Pack a couple of days in advance so you have one less thing to worry about on the big day. Weigh your suitcase, pack efficiently (roll - don't fold!) and check your liquid limits. Now that your paperwork is all together and passport is checked, as above, this can go in your hand luggage.

Pictures

You'll want to capture all your memories so don't forget your camera - it is your honeymoon after all! Pack spares of everything too - two sets of batteries, two sets of memory cards and two chargers. Love the water as much as your new spouse? Don't forget to take an underwater camera with you too. You can buy disposables - although you can't guarantee what the pictures will look like until the film is developed - or digitals - which vary in price. It's a great way to capture your big blue memories though.

Participant activities

Sharing is caring. Make sure you discuss what activities you both want to do BEFORE you go. There should be a balance of his and hers excursions to avoid any unnecessary lover's tiff breaking out. For example, if your partner is a beach bum but you love to explore ancient ruins, perhaps consider a two-centre honeymoon or alternating your days between relaxing on the sand and visiting local towns and heritage sites.

Passion

It's your honeymoon! So don't forget the ROMANCE. Whether you're booking a candlelit dinner on the beach for the two of you, have reserved the honeymoon suite, or have upgraded to first class, try to plan some little things to make this particular holiday extra special.

Protection

NO! We're not talkingthatkind of protection (although that's probably important too). What we're actually referring to is protecting your home before you leave for the airport. Double-check the locks and alarms. Preferably keep your wedding gifts and treasures at a friend or family member's house. Alternatively, get a neighbour to regularly check on your house. Avoid posts on social networking sites that tell everyone you'll be away for two weeks and that your house is empty. Let's face it: there'd be nothing worse than coming home to find your presents have already been opened for you by a couple of burglars… And speaking of protection, never journey without Wanderlust-approved travel insurance and while you're at it - make sure your home and its contents have adequate cover too.
