Honeymoon adventures on the Isle of Wight

Honeymoon adventures on the Isle of Wight

Do caravan parks, rainy days and seaside resorts spring to mind when you think of a romantic break in the Isle of Wight? Think again!

The Isle of Wight is crammed with wild walks, craggy coastlines and surprising wildlife, the perfect place for a quintessential English trip with your other half.

Wildlife, walks and wilderness

If you're both nature lovers, the Isle of Wight is one of the few places left where you can track down the elusive red squirrel. Spot their bushy ginger tails, sharp ears and cheeky faces in woodland across the island. For a sure sighting and great forest walks, try Borthwood Copse, half-way between Newport and Shanklin.

For those couples daring to brave the cold waters (wetsuit recommended!), Bembridge, on the north-east coast, is one of the British Isle's most fascinating areas to snorkel in. While it's no Great Barrier Reef, swimmers can see crabs, fish, strange seaweeds and even seahorses. For those not bold enough to take a dip, rockpooling on the beaches is just as rewarding.

But if spotting wildlife isn't your thing and you're more of an active pair - try some of the island's best walking routes or cycling trails to soak up glorious views, an eventful history and the lush interior. Disused railway tracks are spread around making for an easy way to explore by bike. Walkers can enjoy 67 miles of coastal paths with striking cliff-top views, pebbly beaches and plenty of pubs along the way. If you're planning to drop down on one knee, there's no place better.

Where to stay?

Camping on the Isle of Wight is a great option - weather permitted, of course. With family-friendly sites, wonderfully isolated pitches or campsites with towns close by, there's something for everyone. If camping's not for you, there are plenty of boutique B&Bs dotted around the island. Looking for something remote and romantic, central and chic or beach-based? There are options to suit all couples. The island is also home to cheap-and-cheerful hostels, luxurious hotels, self-catering apartments and holiday homes too - offering something for every budget.

Food to tempt all tastebuds

Foodies will delight at the broad range of cuisines on offer on this cultured island. From candlelit Michelin-starred restaurants to fairytale beach-side cafes there's a whole host of food to munch your way through. Sample traditional English pub grub at The Puddle Inn in Niton, fresh seafood at Murrays in central Cowes, tasty sandwiches at The Willow Tree in Godshill or pack a picnic with ingredients from one of many delis.

New festival for couples

Visit Isle of Wight's new Acoustic Isle festival will run from 13-23 March, seeing hundreds of musicians perform live gigs in intimate locations across the island. And the best thing for couples? It's geared towards those who are 30+ and fancy a short break on the island. David Thornton, CEO of Visit IoW, said: "The Isle of Wight is a hotbed of musical talent and we believe that hosting a music event at this time of the year will give people considering an out-of-season break the extra encouragement they may need to choose us."
