Halloween might not seem very romantic, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be! This year, embrace the holidays with your partner in one of Europe’s spookiest cities
You hear of couples adding spice to a relationship, but with Halloween upon us why not add a little fright instead? We're not talking Friday the 13th or Freddy Kreuger-style terror, just a little extra excuse to snuggle up close. Here in the Unique Honeymoons' office, we're getting into the seasonal spirit and Emma Brisdion has gathered a few ideas for you and a loved one to spend a haunting Halloween!
Make your next date Halloween-themed. The two of you can hop on a train for a trip into the big city and spend a day at the iconic Tower of London - one of England's most haunted buildings. As the site of countless executions over the last 1,000 years, it's no surprise that it is believed to be home of many disgruntled (and ghostly!) residents. It's rumoured that the spirit of Anne Boleyn still wanders the halls along with Sir Walter Raleigh and former Archbishop of Canterbury Thomas Becket.
There's never been a better time to visit either; currently the tower is surrounded by thousands of lovingly-crafted red poppies, carpeting the old moat. Planted by volunteers in honour of Remembrance Day, now is the time to see this spectacular, and truly unique view of the Tower of London.
London isn't the only Brit capital with some spooky goings-on; Edinburgh too has a great reputation if you're after a thrill on fright night. Venture into the deep dark depths of the forgotten underground Blair Street Vaults on a walking tour of the famous 'City of the Dead'. Get lost in the same shadows where the Burke and Hare serial killers used to hunt and store their victims, and visit the eerie haunted graveyards of Old Edinburgh for a night that'll send shivers down your spine. Warning - not for the faint-hearted; bring a partner who won't mind you grabbing their hand regularly throughout the night!
Put a unique spin on a romantic weekend in the City of Love by exploring the darker side of Paris' history. Search for a small, dark green building at the Place Denfert-Rochereau; this unassuming hut hides a spiral staircase descending into the darkened underground streets - the entrance to the legendary catacombs. Dubbed 'the world's largest grave', the eerie walls of this 320km quarry network are lined with real human bones and are thought to be the final resting place for nearly 6 million people. Riddled with history, the catacombs are a great option for couples wanting to get into the spirit of Halloween, without being made to jump!
Take a trip to the hometown of the world's most famous vampire, Dracula, and spend a weekend in the Romanian region of Transylvania. The streets might not be littered with pumpkins or fancy dress but the Gothic castles nestled in the rugged mountains and ancient winding medieval streets set the scene for a mystical Halloween. Beware, the age-old folklore and ancient legends still run deep in the local communities, so settle down for a drink and listen to tales of the region's turbulent past and the myths that are still believed. Have your wooden stakes and garlic cloves at the ready, because to top it all off Bran Castle, supposedly the home of Dracula, is open to the public!
Despite also being known as the Château de 'Noisy', this 19th-century castle in Belgium lies ominously silent, having been left abandoned since 1980. The unease oozing from this crumbling scene may remind you of a horror film, and once you step inside it becomes clear why: the Château was used as an orphanage after the First World War. Derelict and in dire need of repair, broken paintings and children's blackboards still stand in the ruins of the old classrooms and though the roof is dilapidated, the building has attracted attention from mediums, ghost hunters and even exploring honeymooners alike.
