Five foody honeymoons

Five foody honeymoons

What better way to cook up some romance than to honeymoon in a culinary hotspot? Alexandra Gregg finds out more…

Imagine being able to create an exotic, candlelit meal from scratch for your partner. Better yet, imagine cooking up the dish together. As far as couples activities go, it doesn't get more romantic than that. But it's one thing being a lover of diverse cuisines - being able to actually cook them is a whole different ball game. Here are some of our favourite cooking courses for foody couples, which will teach you your spaghetti from your linguine and your tagine from your tabbouleh.

1. Amalfi Coast, Italy

If it's good enough for Pierce Brosnan or Woody Harrelson, then it's good enough for any newlywed! The famous one-day course at Mamma Agata is the ideal spot for foodies to perfect their traditional pasta dishes, cakes, marmalade and preserves. It takes place in the home of Mamma Agata, which sits on a clifftop overlooking the much-loved Amalfi Coast. Her garden is bursting with lemon trees, fruit trees, flowers, vegetables and poultry, so all of the ingredients are fresh.

At the end of this private tutorial you'll be able to cook natural Mediterranean meals for yourself and your partner. Course prices start from €180pp (£151) and vary throughout the year. For opening dates, visit the website here.

Where to stay? Try the Albachiara B&B, in Agerola, on the Amalfi Coast. It has sterling reviews and offers doubles from just £40pn.

2. Marrakech, Morocco

You can chuck almost anything into a tagine - meat, fish, vegetables, or a combination of all three. Its diversity forms the framework of Moroccan grub. At the Rhode School of Cuisine, just outside Marrakech, you'll learn how to infuse exotic flavours, such as saffron, paprika and ginger, together to create a meal that will truly impress your new spouse. Set against the majestic Atlas and Jbel Ette Mountains, Dar Liqama - where the school is located - reflects the romantic Moroccan architecture. It offers graceful archways and a majestic interior courtyard, filled with scented flowers and the calming sounds of a bubbling fountain.

Where to stay? The weekly fee for the course - from €2,145pp (£1,805) - includes accommodation, hands-on cooking lessons, food and wine. Flights are excluded.

3. Santorini, Greece

The picturesque Santorini is famed for being one of the most romantic, off the radar, spots in Europe. And the cooking course at the Selene restaurant upholds that perception. For a day - or three days if you're in a group - you'll discover the island's history and gastronomy, visit wineries and prepare freshly-caught fish while out to sea. The culinary demonstrations are all about using local ingredients to create quintessentially Greek food. And if you've tasted the British take on feta cheese - you'll know what a difference it makes when you have the real thing!

The course is priced at €350pp (£294), which excludes hotels, transportation and winery excursions.

Where to stay? The beautiful Oia Sunset Villas (self-catering) have sweeping views over Santorini. Doubles are from £184pn for a minimum three-night stay.

4. Chiang Mai, Thailand

Get stuck in! Create flavour-packed curry pastes, spicy soups and sticky rice on a cooking course in Thailand. If you're a foody who loves Asian food, this is the location for you and your partner. Chiang Mai is ripe for exploration, so it goes without saying that the food here is much the same. At the Thai Culinary School you'll learn all about the different dishes that are native to the region - from steamed fish in banana leaves to Thai hot and sour soup - and then some. The lessons are comprehensive and intensive, but at least you'll have your loved one by your side.

Where to stay? The masterminds behind Thai Cooking Holidays can arrange accommodation as part of the course package. Prices range from $316pp (£192) for the eight-day course, including internal flights from Bangkok to Chiang Mai, accommodation and lunches on the course. For a budget option, you will be booked into the two-star Prince Hotel. Pay a bit more more and you can relax at the four-star Tamarind Village.

5. Bordeaux, France

Wine and cooking are the lifeblood of France; so what better way to get immersed in the country than to learn the craft? The six-day Bordeaux Grand Cru Cooking and Wine Experience is a great way to delve into an authentic honeymoon experience. The trip - which has three departure dates in 2014 - includes visits to local farmers markets, learning the ins and outs of French cuisine and sampling fine wines in a tasting master class.

Where to stay? On all tours guests will stay at the private 18th century chateau of Margaret and Ronald Rens, presidents of the Bordeaux Wine Experience. Tours run on Jun 9-14, Jun 30-Jul 5, and Sep 22-27 for €3,995pp (£3,364). Call +33 556 20 64 12 for more information.
