Big country breakdown: Chile

Big country breakdown: Chile

Some countries are so sprawling it’s hard to know where to begin. Here to help is a region by region guide of what’s cool for honeymooners in Chile

Arica:

Known as the "city of eternal spring", Arica has a laid-back vibe, beaches and a surf scene.

Cool for honeymooners:

When to go: By the coast it's warm year round. As you go inland and up into the altiplano, summer (Oct-Mar) is the rainy season, which usually means an afternoon shower.

Atacama:

The Atacama Desert is spellbinding both by day and by night when clear skies mean you can lie back and look up into the cosmos.

Cool for honeymooners:

When to go: Can be visited all year round; due to the high altitude days are warm and nights are always cold.

Santiago, Valpariso and the Winelands:

Long bypassed by travellers bound for well known sexy cities like Buenos Aires or Rio, the capital, Santiago de Chile, is one of South America's most modern, most forward-looking and most underrated cities.

Cool for honeymooners:

When to go: Santiago and the nearby coast have a Mediterranean climate. It's dry and warm over the summer months (Nov-Apr).

Lakes & Volcanoes:

The Andes begin to dip to a hike-friendly height - around 2,000-3,000m above sea level - where great lakes left behind by the last ice age have cut natural low-level passes deep into the range.

Cool for honeymooners:

When to go: The best times to visit are in spring (Nov-Dec) and autumn (Mar-Apr) when the contrast between the chilly morning mists and evening breezes which balance the heat of the day aren't so huge.

Patagonia:

Explore the wilderness at the end of the world. South of the island of Chiloé is a wild, rugged, romantic coastline of fjords, glaciers, white-water rivers, cobalt coloured lakes, dramatic mountains and lonely roads.

Cool for honeymooners:

When to go: Best visited in summer (Nov-Mar) as in winter (June-Aug) it gets very cold and some areas become inaccessible.

Easter Island:

A five-hour flight from the mainland, Easter Island (Rapa Nui to its native Polynesians) is an open-air archaeological museum.

Cool for honeymooners:

When to go: Easter Island can be visited all year round. Most people visit in summer between Nov-Mar; outside these months it's a little cooler but you'll have the sites to yourself.
