9 volcanic seductions

9 volcanic seductions

Feel the power of the earth as you gaze into its firey heart. Add some volcanic seduction to your honeymoon

From magma-spewing giants, to the dramatic landscapes left behind by dormant volcanoes, we've scouted the world for explosive places to visit with the lava of your life. Boom!

1. Isla de Ometepe - Nicaragua

The Isla de Ometepe, which floats dreamily in Lake Nicaragua, is made up of two volcanoes: the majestic, perfectly cone-shaped and still active Concepción, and the dormant Maderas, swathed in a cloud forest and with a mystical lagoon in its crater.

Feel the heat… up north - Los Maribios are a chain of volcanoes north of Leon. Five of these are active but most of them are climbable, and camping is possible on many of the cones.

2. Caldeirão, Corvo - Azores

The Azores' explosive genesis has left a volcanic legacy in the form of a cluster of islands that make up this archipelago. Of all the dramatic landscapes that remain this collapsed caldera on Corvo is the most impressive. With lakes and small cones inside you have the option to paraglide over it or explore it on foot - either way it's stunning.

Feel the heat… at the volcanic seawater hotsprings at Ponta da Ferraria on São Miguel. Relax in the warm waters of the natural pool at high tide, when enough sea water has flowed in to temper the scalding heat of volcanically heated spring water.

3. White Island - New Zealand

Get up close to roaring steam vents, bubbling pits of mud, hot volcanic streams and the amazing lake of steaming acid on this erupting island in the Bay of Plenty, off the east coast of the North Island.

Feel the heat…White Island can be accessed by helicopter from Rotorua, Tauranga or Whakatane, but by far the best way is by boat from the latter where you can spot dolphins and whales on the way.

4. Mount Bromo - Indonesia

Situated on the island of Java this still-active volcano can be seen smoking gently through the mists of dawn. Fine dawn views can be combined with horseback rides that get close to bubbling lava.

Feel the heat… if you arrive during the annual Yadnya Kasada Festival, you can witness the mass trek by the local people attempting to appease the Gods by throwing food and money into the caldera.

5. Mount Yasur - Vanuatu

Tanna Island boasts one of the world's most accessible live volcanoes that has been erupting since before Captain Cook sailed past it in 1774. At night, it's a natural firework display especially in Mar-Apr (the end of wet season) when it's most active and you may have to keep your distance.

Feel the heat… you can stay at the base, walk right up to the crater and look in at the bubbling lava, then ash-board back down.

6. Kilauea, Hawaii - USA

See lava turn into land on The Big Island by exploring Volcanoes National Park. Follow Crater Rim Drive along the summit caldera - if recent eruptions allow - and get glimpses of the lava exploding as it hits the ocean. Walk through old lava tunnels within the native rainforest or take a trek into a crater.

Feel the heat… the best time to visit Hawaii is Apr-June or Sept-Dec; the weather's great and, surprisingly, it's quiet.

7. Piton de la Fournaise - La Reunion

This smouldering mound offers 20 different routes to hike up to the crater. It's one of the world's most active volcanoes: there have been between two and four eruptions annually since 1998.

Feel the heat… explore the island's three lush natural amphitheatres Cirque de Mafate, Cirque de Cilaos and Cirque de Salazie. Hiking in the Cirques is extraordinary and for those seeking an extra thrill you can go canyoning among the waterfalls.

8. Avachinsky - Russia

Kamchatka in the far east of the country sits right on the Pacific Ring of Fire, where 200 volcanoes pepper the 1,200km long peninsula. 'Avacha' as it's known isn't as high as many of the peninsula's other volcanoes, but it is feisty and the view from top is worth the effort it takes to get there.

Feel the heat… it's not easy to get out there; it's closer to Los Angeles than the capital - an 11hr flight from Moscow. You'll need a helicopter or serious wheels to get around, but if you manage to make the journey it's an incredible wilderness.

9. Mount Etna, Sicily

Europe's tallest and most active volcano dominates the skyline of eastern Sicily. Take a cable car up the snowclad slopes from Rifugio Sapienza to the upper station from where you can take a 4x4 to the viewing area. Walks on the crater are available, but always go with a guide.

Feel the heat… at the nightly show put on by nearby volcanic island Stromboli off Sicily's northern coast. Watch the explosions from the water, or get a little closer - you can look into the bubbling lava lake from a natural balcony 200m above.
