7 romantic things to do in Zimbabwe

7 romantic things to do in Zimbabwe

With its rich landscapes, colonial cities and wonderful wildlife, Zimbabwe has plenty for couples to do on honeymoon as Emily Tredinnick discovers...

1. Head over Hills:

Discover the natural beauty of the Matobo Hills, a giant formation made up of igneous granite rock, it's easily one of Zimbabwe's most spectacular natural spots. Climb to the top of the Hills as the sun begins its descent over the African bush, for breathtaking views of Matobo NP.

If you're planning on staying in Matobo overnight, we like Camp Amalinda Safari Lodge. The nine rooms are like miniature caves, and were individually designed into the granite rock. Romantic extras include an outdoor bath and a private terrace accessed by rope bridge. The secluded location also means it's a popular area for spotting game, one couple even woke up to a leopard lounging outside their bedroom window!

2. Have it handmade:

Forget your regular, high-street jewellery store and discover the independent jewellery shops of Bulawayo.

Rather than choosing a generic bracelet or necklace, design the perfect gift for your loved one instead at Treasure Trove on 13th Avenue at Williams Engineering. You could draw your own, one-off piece or take in examples of what you'd like your jewellery to look like but make sure you provide all the necessary details such as size and metal type i.e silver or gold. The jeweller could take up to a week to create your piece, so keep this in mind when placing your order.

3. Explore the city:

With its chilled, laid-back vibe, Bulawayo is a popular alternative to the country's capital city and offers plenty of things to do.

Couples can catch a show at the Bulawayo theatre, explore the Hillside Dams or visit the Douslin House & National Art Gallery for modern African art set in a wonderful colonial building. For more examples of colonial architecture, stop by the Bulawayo Club. As former gentleman's club located in the city centre, it's well worth stopping by for lunch or a drink mid-afternoon.

4. Float, fall or fly:

Keep those hearts racing with the huge selection of adventure-filled activities available at Victoria Falls.

For incredible views of the waterfall and surrounding area, take to the skies for an exhilarating helicopter ride. Or if you're feeling brave, take the ultimate 'leap of faith' together and free-fall 70m on the gorge swing. After you're action-packed day at the Falls, relax onboard one of the sunset river cruises along the Zambezi. The boat will travel at a gentle pace, giving you time to watch the hippos as they breach the water while you enjoy a glass of wine as the sun slowly sets on the Zambezi River.

Named after one of the world's Natural Wonders, the Victoria Falls Hotel is a wonderful Edwardian building oozing with history and adorned in British-colonial design.

With incredible views of Victoria Falls and the magnificent railway bridge, this hotel is the perfect place to unwind if you've had a long morning of exploring. Tuck into the hotel's famous high-tea, a carefully prepared assortment of cakes, scones and jam, as well as a selection of finger sandwiches. When you feel like you can move again after your indulgent spread, stroll through the hotel's private garden that leads down to the Falls for the perfect photo opportunity.

6. Go wild in Hwange:

As Zimbabwe's largest national park and with over 100 different species roaming the grounds, if you're looking to safari in Zimbabwe then Hwange is the best place to go.

There are plenty of luxury camps dotted around the park that offer safari game drives, comfortable tents with en-suite facilities and meals included. Our favourite camp in Hwange is The Hide, a five-star safari camp with secluded accomodation overlooking a popular watering hole. There's a tree house called the 'Doves Nest- - perfect for newlyweds. Guided walks and game drives into the bush are available throughout the day and if you want a break, you could always take a soak in the outdoor bath and watch the animals wander by.

7. Take a day trip:

Spend the day exploring Harare, Zimbabwe's most vibrant city - and experience the region's urban side.

The bustling market of Mbare is the area's largest market, 5km from the city centre, and sells everything from traditonal foods to authentic African crafts. Pickpockets are common, so make sure you put all valuables out of sight. Spend your afternoon strolling the city's National Botanic Gardens or take a picnic to Harare Gardens. For dinner, head to the Kombahari restaurant at the Rainbow Towers for a menu filled with delicious Afro-Asian cuisine and a 'sit-around-the-pot' grill, so you can watch the chefs rustle up your meals in front of you.
