7 romantic things to do in Berlin

7 romantic things to do in Berlin

Berlin isn’t exactly famous for being a romantic city – but for a break from the traditional, the cool German capital may just surprise you says Katherine Price

1. Enjoy some traditional Berlin cuisine

You'd be amazed at how romantic beer and a plate of meat and rotkohl (red cabbage) can be! Swap the raucous atmosphere of a Bavarian beer hall for a small, cosy, softly lit restaurant such as Zum Schusterjungen (the website is in German, but the menu comes in English) and you have the quiet, romantic atmosphere and some truly delicious traditional, home-cooked fare. It's no delicate, five-star meal, but the staff are friendly and it's great value.

2. Old school cinema glamour

The adorable Lichtblick Kino features old black and white films in their original language every day - German, French and English included. Casablanca is shown every week and, despite being a cinema that only sits about 20 people, you're more than likely to have the room to yourself. Grab yourselves some popcorn, snuggle up together and enjoy one of the most classic love stories that black and white Hollywood cinema produced. Perfect for film aficionados or incurable romantics.

3. Stop for 'kaffee und kuchen'

Treat your other half to a lunchtime 'kaffee und kuchen' date - Geman-style coffee and cake. Like many of the other cafés on Georgenstraße, Café Chagall in Mitte makes the most of its domed ceiling (beneath the Friedrichstraße S-Bahn line) with some wonderfully mesmerising paintings. This quiet, cosy café has lots of dark, candlelit romantic corners to cuddle up in, even in the daytime. The cake is homemade, the coffee good and there's even a special 'kaffee und kuchen' deal.

On the other hand, if you're looking for something a bit more up-market, the best cheesecake in Berlin can be found at Princess Cheesecake. Natural, organic and locally sourced, the cheesecake is astounding, the drinks refreshing, the staff welcoming and the café small but roomy. Enjoy a bit of luxury and treat yourselves - you won't regret it.

4. Listen to Berlin's best

Berlin is well known for the arts. If you're interested in classical music, there's no more a romantic way to spend an evening than in the stunning Staatsoper, enjoying the talents of the Berlin Philharmonic (there are free performances on Tuesdays) or a musical concert in the beautiful jade-green French Cathedral on Gendarmenmarkt. There is also the Deutsche Oper, the Komische Oper, the Konzerthaus, and the Staatsballett.

However, if your tastes are more contemporary, there's also the Astra Kulturhaus, the O2 World and Fritz Club: the touring locations of choice for today's musicians. Make some memories at a gig over a musician you both enjoy.

5. Get off the beaten track

It's also incredibly easy to escape Berlin's city centre to find a quiet, romantic spot together. Parks such as Tiergarten, Treptower Park and Victoria Park are all fairly central escapes if you need some time away from the bustle - you'd never guess that you were in the middle of one of the most famous cities in Europe. In wintertime, Tiergarten is practically deserted and becomes a silent winter wonderland of snow and ice. The romantically placed Café am Neuen See becomes a fairytale location in the middle of the park in the evening.

Further out from the city, the lakes such as Wannsee, Schlachtensee and Krumme Lanke make for great day trips. Take a picnic and have a romantic camp-out on the side of the lake. Or, if you're around Schlachtensee, drop in to the Alte Fischerhütte, a romantic cabin-style restaurant. There's also the grill stand next to the lake to enjoy a drink or a bratwurst while watching the sun set over the trees.

6. Explore the Christmas markets

It might be a seasonal selection, but it doesn't get much more romantic than Berlin's Christmas markets. Glühwein, mistletoe and the warm fuzzy feelings of the approaching festivities all make for a wonderful atmosphere. The most beautiful Christmas markets include the Charlottenburg palace market, the old-fashioned Gendarmenmarkt Christmas market under the stunning lit façades of the Konzerthaus and the French and German cathedrals, and the Potsdamer Platz Christmas market.

If you're willing to face the crowds, the Alexanderplatz and Prenzlauer Berg Kulturbrauerei are also pretty special. Otherwise, get off the tourist trail completely; one of the best is just outside the city in Spandau.

7. Take to the skies

Paris has the Eiffel Tower, New York City has the Empire State Building and Berlin has the TV Tower. It doesn't get much more romantic than looking out over the city up 200m from one of the tallest buildings in Europe. It's not exactly Sam and Annie in Sleepless in Seattle, but it's the closest you'll find in the German capital.

Enjoy romantic drinks with panoramic views across the city, or, if you're splashing out, reserve a table and enjoy dinner while the ball of the tower slowly rotates to give you a new perspective on every course. Enjoy the wonderful views over the city with your loved one and plan your next stop from above - it just doesn't get better.
