6 winter honeymoon destinations

6 winter honeymoon destinations

Cuddle up in your very own igloo, explore an Icelandic cave or turn up the heat in Jamaica with Emily Tredinnick's 6 favourite winter honeymoon destinations.

Ice hotels: Jukkasjarvi, Sweden and Lapland, Finland

Sleeping in a room made of ice has to be one of the 'coolest' experiences you could share together. So pack your thermals, wrap-up warm and head to the world's original icehotel in Sweden. Located 200km north of the Arctic Circle, newlyweds can cuddle up in the deluxe suite or one of the 16 art suites, all of which include winter clothing, gloves and shoes with double sleeping bags to keep you both cosy. Come morning, you'll be woken up with a glass of hot lingonberry juice or if that doesn't warm you up, hop into the sauna before heading to breakfast.

If you're not up for sleeping in minus temperatures and would rather experience the Arctic in a warmer environment, then the Igloo Village at Hotel Kakslauttanen in Finland, is for you. Glass igloos offer wonderful views of the Arctic night sky, so can watch the Northern Lights from the comfort of your own cosy bed!

Northern Lights: The Yukon

Yellowknife juts into the 14-mile long Great Slave Lake and enjoys plenty of clear skies during winter. A gateway to the Canadian Arctic, the city sits 400km south of the Arctic Circle and offers a range of wilderness trips in search of the aurora.

Hop on a ski plane to the Blachford Lake Lodge and stay in a luxurious wooden cabin that overlooks Great Slave Lake. Also known as 'Honeymoon Island', Wills & Kate stayed here, making it a hot spot for newlyweds looking for a peaceful location to share their Northern Lights experience. Wake-up calls are provided when the Lights do appear and what better way to watch the aurora than from the lodge's steamy hot tub? Located perfectly under the stars, stay warm while watching one of the world's natural wonders dance in the midnight sky.

Winter wonderland: Finland

Finnish Lapland is the perfect place if you're after a real winter wonderland honeymoon as it's guaranteed snowfall from December to March.

Head north for cosy log cabins, beautiful vistas of the aurora borealis and action-packed days ranging from husky sledging between the snowy pine trees, to snowmobiling through Muonio's white wilderness. Or stay south in the Finnish capital of Helsinki. Its magnificent Art Nouveau architecture looks particularly beautiful this time of year beneath a blanket of snow. If you're worried about staying warm, take up Finland's favourite pastime: relaxing in a sauna.

Snow sports: Nozawa Onsen, Japan

For a ski resort with a difference, head east to the slopes of Japan. Enjoy some of the best snow in the world, followed by chilled out evenings where après ski means relaxing in hot natural springs. One of the best ski spots in Japan is Nozawa Onsen, a quaint little village tucked away from the overcrowded resorts and nestled within the eastern Alps of Japan. Wooden houses line the cobbled streets and there are thirteen onsen's (hot natural springs) to choose from to relax after a day on the slopes.

If you're after a traditional Japanese Ryoken to stay in, then the Kiriya Ryokan offers comfortable rooms with futon bedding, Kaiseki meals (traditional, multi-course dinner) and a private onsen. Accommodation in Nozawa is limited, so book in advance.

Alternative snow sports: Iceland

Lose the skis and swap the slopes for a winter adventure of a lifetime in Iceland. Couples who are after adrenaline-filled days of hiking, horse-riding, climbing or even snorkelling, will find plenty to do on this wonderful island.

Explore the incredible glaciers of Sólheimajökull and walk through the natural labyrinth of the everchanging ice formations or discover the nooks and crevices of Iceland's spectacular ice caves. Snorkelling in icy waters may sound crazy, but all equipment will be provided to make sure you enjoy your underwater adventure in the crystal clear waters of the Silfra. An experienced guide will accompany you depending on the trip and many of the day activities available will include a pick-up and drop-off service from the country's capital, Reykjavík, making it the perfect base to stay if you're after an action-packed trip.

Winter warmer: Jamaica

Turn up the heat on your your winter honeymoon with a romantic trip to this cultured Carribean paradise, where temperatures average on a luscious 27°C. Locals take to the streets for funky music festivals, or for something more peaceful, you could head to the misty Blue Mountains. These atmospherically cloud-shrouded (and distinctly cooler) peaks offer forested trails and coffee plantations, so you can hike all morning and be on the beach by the afternoon.

For the ultimate honeymoon experience, check in at Jamaica's renowned hotel, Strawberry Hill. Set on the hillside with magnificent views of Kingston and the Blue Mountains valley, honeymooners can relax in one of the individually designed 19th century cottages, lounge by the infinity pool for breathtaking vistas or be pampered as a pair in the hotel's spa.
