6 romantic things to do in Ireland

6 romantic things to do in Ireland

We’re celebrating St Patrick’s Day (17 March) in true Unique Honeymoons fashion and exploring some of the most fun romantic things to see and do across Ireland

Search the Emerald Isle for a lucky clover

About one in 10,000 clovers get the fourth leaf mutation, but despite their rarity, they're not as hard to find as you might think. There's even a five-leaf variety out there, and higher! Although there's no best place to find this lucky plant, mutant clovers are more prevalent later in the summer than they are in spring. So if you're not planning a trip to Ireland now, then pencil it in for July or August. Once you've found your scarce sprig, present it to your loved one for an eternity of good luck together.

Kiss the Blarney Stone

If you can spare five minutes from locking lips with you belle or beau, head to Blarney Castle, near Cork, home of the romantically-renowned Blarney Stone. The fortress is a place of pilgrimage for those who want to kiss the rock and acquire the powers of eloquence (and skill at flattery) that it bestows. Its origins are debatable, but its magic - which is said to help you sweet-talk your spouse - can never be doubted…

See sunset at the Giant's Causeway

Gaze out to sea, hand in hand, as the flaming glow of the sunset bounces off the once-molten rocks that make up the Giant's Causeway. According to legend, an Irish giant built the craggy columns so he could cross the sea to Scotland and pick a fight with a fellow giant. One version of the story says that he created the highway to reach his sweetheart. The truth is that this geological wonder was formed by volcanic activity more than 50 millions years ago, but we prefer the romantic version of events. And so do many visiting couples, who take inspiration from the myth and this spectacular spot.

Let your love soar in the Mourne Mountains

Designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, you could be forgiven for mistaking the vast Mournes for a backdrop plucked straight from theLord of the Rings. In actual fact, they're better. An adventurer's paradise, these fauna-filled peaks are perfect for couples who love to trek so high that they're practically touching the clouds. Or, if walking isn't your thing, why not cycle or ride? Nearby you'll find some of the most seclude beaches in Northern Ireland, with ample opportunities for golfing, sailing and fishing.

Dive into the Blue Pool together

Deep in the biosphere reserve of Killarney National Park is the Cloghereen Blue Pool Walk and, within that, the Blue Pool. Often overlooked amid this free-to-roam park's numerous attractions, the pool's crystal-clear waters are calm and reflective, the trees sway in the breeze and there is barely a sound. You'd never believe that this hidden paradise is signposted! Whisk your partner there before everyone else discovers the secret.

Step back in time at Salthill

The time-warp town of Salthill is just that - a time warp. Its old-style promenade resurrects its history as a 1950s hotspot for dance and show bands and it lives and breathes everything a traditional seaside settlement should: fish and chips, ice-cream, and buckets and spades. It's the perfect excuse for you and your partner to act like kids on a romantic break exploring Ireland's landscapes.
