6 romantic dates in London

City breakers are flocking to London now the sun is shining – Alexandra Gregg shows you how to bring some romance to your spring/summer trip

1. Discover carvings of colour at the Tate Modern

From dainty snow flowers to vibrant circus scenes, the forthcoming Henri Matisse Cut Outs exhibition is set to showcase a dazzling, beautiful array of 120 works made between 1936 and 1954. These bold, oversized creations are both romantic and engaging in their simplicity. It's a once-in-a-lifetime chance to see this artwork all in one place - ideal for a memorable date in the city. The exhibition runs from 17 April-7 September 2014, adult entry is £18.

Tate Modern, Bankside, London SE1 9TG

Nearest tubes? Southwark, Blackfriars, St Paul's

2. Raise a glass to your partner in the Duck and Rice

If you love good, authentic grub as much as you love your partner, try the new Duck and Rice restaurant, opening this year. It will be the first Chinese gastropub in Soho and is the brainchild of Alan Yau - the man behind Japanese noodle bar Wagamama. Sadly, more details about the restaurant (and its official opening date) are still a closely-guarded secret, wrapped in an enigma, and cloaked in mystery. Keep an eye on Yau's website and you could be one of the first couples to enjoy a romantic meal there…

Duck and Rice, 90 Berwick Street, London W1F 0QB

Nearest tubes? Piccadilly Circus, Leicester Square

3. Travel back in time at the British Museum

Discover the world of fierce Nordic warriors at the British Museum's Vikings: Life and Legend exhibition. It's the first major display to feature Vikings for nearly three decades and includes archeological discoveries never seen before. Although the Viking Age, from the 8th to the 11th centuries, wasn't exactly romantic, this showcase is the first to appear in The Sainsbury Exhibitions Gallery and therefore a thoroughly unique experience. Running until 22 June, it's part of the new World Conservation and Exhibitions Centre, purpose-built for temporary exhibitions. Entry is £16.50 for adults or free for members.

British Museum, Great Russell Street, London WC1B 3DG

Nearest tubes? Tottenham Court Road, Holborn, Russell Square, Goodge Street

4. Pirouette for your partner at the Royal Albert Hall

Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet is a timeless tale of tragedy and romance - perpetually billed as the greatest love story ever told (despite its less-than-lovely ending). And now the play has been transferred to the dance stage, with more than 120 members of the English National Ballet performing its memorable scenes: from the majestic masked ball to the passionate balcony scene. Get wrapped up in the whirling, delicate motions of the dancing between 11-22 June for just £10+ a ticket.

Nearest tubes? South Kensington, High Street Kensington

5. Sing the language of love at the English National Opera

A first for the English National Opera, Berlioz's Benvenuto Cellini offers tender music set against a plot of desire, elopement and intrigue. Based on the autobiography of celebrated 16th-century goldsmith and sculptor Benvenuto Cellini, the opera is a love story at its heart. And as all good romance connoisseurs know, nothing sets an amorous mood better than classical music. The show runs between 5-27 June and tickets start from £12pp.

Nearest tubes? Charing Cross, Leicester, Covent Garden, Embankment

6. Take a post-dinner stroll in Hyde Park

There are few more romantic places for an amble than along the tree-lined pathway of Lover's Walk in Hyde Park. And, if the weather is fine, why not treat your partner to a picnic of fresh strawberries and champagne, or take a poetry-fuelled boat ride on the Serpentine, inspired by The Notebook? With its central location, 4,000 trees, and abundant rose gardens, the park epitomises romance - whatever the time of year. Open from 5am-midnight.

Hyde Park, Westminster, London W2 2UH

Nearest tubes? Lancaster Gate, Marble Arch, Hyde Park Corner, Knightsbridge
