Planning a romantic Moroccan honeymoon atop Mount Toubkal? Here are the five things you need to know before you go
Ex-military man, motivational speaker and rally driver Tony Harris just got back from his belated honeymoon, climbing Mount Toubkal with his wife Liz.
In 2009, while serving as an infantry officer in the Royal Fusiliers, his vehicle hit a bomb in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. The blast seriously injured Tony and his left leg had to be amputated. He never thought he'd be able to climb a mountain the size of the Toubkal but, with some encouragement from the teams at KE Adventure Travel and Wanderlust, he and Liz conquered the Moroccan peak in August 2014.
Here are five things he wishes he'd known before he went…
You can change currency to Moroccan Dirhams in UK airports, and the foreign exchange desks are open in Marrakech Airport even if you are arriving very late in the evening.
It really does get very cold on the mountain, even during the height of summer, so bring soft shell jackets, gloves and hats despite your own opinions. It was -2ºC with wind chill.
The best tagine you have in Morocco will be on the mountain, so enjoy it. Marrakech restaurants cannot cook tagine half as good as your muleteer.
Coming down is the most challenging part of your climb. The rocks and scree slopes can be treacherous, so take care.
You will have to climb part of the way in darkness so make sure you bring a good head torch and spare batteries.
