5 romantic things to do in Suffolk

5 romantic things to do in Suffolk

Idyllic countryside, cobbled villages and quaint seaside towns; Suffolk is spoilt for choice when it comes to romance – as Alexandra Gregg discovers…

1. Explore Framlingham Castle, Framlingham

For history lovers looking for a taste of times gone by, try this once-fearsome fortress (pictured). Standing proudly atop a moat, it looks as if it's been plucked from a fairytale or a timeless love story. It's hard to believe it was once the residence of Mary Tudor. Those who visited the castle during her reign were told terrifying tales of how 'Bloody Mary' had given birth to a monster within those stone walls…

But never fear: the horror is pretty limited these days. Instead, the stronghold's romantic architecture is the perfect setting for getting cultural with your beloved.

2. Try something sweet at Les Chocolats Belge, Woodbridge

For the ancient Aztecs, chocolate was more than just a comfort food - it was a powerful aphrodisiac. So what other excuse do you need? Les Chocolats Belge is a family-run shop in the heart of Woodbridge. It lovingly sources chocolates from some of the most renowned chocolatiers in Belgium, including Chateau Blanc, Gudrun, Ickx, and Cavalier, and has something for every occasion: from Valentine's Day to weddings. There are few better ways to win your beloved's heart than with a box of these beauties.

3. Stroll along Aldeburgh seafront

For a tranquil seaside break with your loved one, Aldeburgh is one of the best spots in Suffolk. Renowned for its Blue Flag shingle beach and fresh catch, on a fine day you can walk along the pebbles with a hearty portion of local fish and chips to share. Bliss.

4. Discover Covehithe Beach in the moonlight

Deserted and wild, Covehithe Beach is best explored at night. Illuminated by the glow of the moon, hunt for fossils together or enjoy a night-time picnic amid the red cliffs, hilly dunes and grassy fields that frame the sands. Be sure to wrap up warm and bring a couple of torches for the walk back.

Prefer to venture out during the day? Covehithe is just as stunning in the sunshine and boasts a winding coastal path - ideal for active couples - as well as the incredible Church of St Andrew. Built in the 17th century, the church is unique in that it was constructed within the ruins of another, much older, house of worship.

5. Turn back time in Lavenham

Half-timbered houses, crooked halls and ancient teahouses - it's no wonder Lavenham is often described as 'Britain's best-preserved medieval village'. The locals embrace the accolade too, putting on a year-long calendar of festivals, markets and events to showcase the seemingly-impossible, striking architecture that makes the village so unique. It looks particularly magical beneath a clear night sky too; the narrow streets are wonderfully quiet and the leaning buildings emit a warm, amber glow.

Where to stay?

Lodge _DSC0234

For a touch of seclusion, your own private hot tub and fresh farm fare - including sausages, bacon and eggs - spend a long weekend at one of the wood lodges in Athelington Hall, Horham. It's a great base for exploring both Suffolk and Norfolk, and is unbelievably pretty; especially when you take a stroll past the neigbouring church, St Peter's, which is clad in ivy in the summer. Short breaks start from £249.
