5 romantic things to do in London for free this May bank holiday

The 2014 early May bank holiday falls on 5 May and, as usual, London offers plenty of scope for free romance in the city. Now all we need is sunshine…

1. Malaysia Kitchen Spring Market

When? Saturday 3 May & Sunday 4 May, 10am-7pm
Where? Between OXO Tower Wharf and Waterloo Bridge, South Bank
Nearest tube: Southwark, Waterloo

Whether you and your loved one are into juicy beef rendang, tangy chicken satay, tasty laksa, or all of the above, the Malaysia Kitchen Spring Market is a great free outing for foodies. Twelve different restaurants from across the country will gather to showcase the very best in Malaysian cuisine, coupled with some traditional street entertainment.

2. Canalway Cavalcade

When? Saturday 3 May & Sunday 4 May, 10am-6pm; Monday 5 May, 10am-5pm
Where? Little Venice, Paddington, London W2 1TH
Nearest tube: Warwick Avenue, Maida Vale, Edgware Road, Paddington

Is there anything more romantic than boating? If you love the water, make time to join in with the 2014 edition of the Canalway Cavalcade. This quirky waterways and community festival - first launched in 1983 - is a thoroughly British affair, complete with morris dancers, real ale, Punch & Judy shows, market stalls and of course, more than 100 boats. A particular highlight is the pageant of decorated boats on the Saturday at 2:30pm.

3. New Cross and Deptford Free Film Festival: Grease

When? Saturday 3 May, 8pm
Where? Telegraph Hill Upper Park, Kitto Road, New Cross, London SE14 5TY
Nearest tube: Brockley or Nunhead (overground)

Grease is the word! For a touch of teen angst and romance this three-day weekend, head to this open-air event in Lewisham. Dress up as Danny and Sandy and get ready to sing-along to this 1978 classic, after all: it's got groove, it's got meaning! And don't forget to bring blankets and thermals too. While the park has magnificent views over London (expect a killer backdrop) it might be a bit chilly. Another reason to snuggle up close to your loved one…

4. Hackney Flea Market

When? Saturday 3 May & Sunday 4 May, 11am-6pm
Where? Abney Hall, 73A Church Street, Stoke Newington, N16 OAS
Nearest tube: Manor House or Stoke Newington (overground)

Why not treat your partner to a retro gift? From vintage clothes to collectible records and honky-tonk memorabilia, expect strange and wonderful wares at the Hackney Flea Market, which returns this weekend.

5. Picnic in Terrace Gardens, London

When? Whenever you fancy!
Where? Petersham Road, Richmond Hill, Richmond, TW10 6RH
Nearest tube: Richmond (overground)

With the British weather showing signs of improving, it's the perfect time to pack a picnic basket and set off for some al fresco dining. These Richmond gardens are a great place too, as they also provide abundant opportunities for a romantic stroll, as well as views of the River Thames. If sweeping vistas are your thing, there's even a telescope for spotting all of the city landmarks. On a clear day, you can even see as far as Windsor Castle - right next to the Unique Honeymoons office!
