5 romantic things to do in Glasgow

With the Commonwealth Games about to kick off, what better time to whisk your partner away for a romantic escape in Glasgow?

Everybody's talking about Glasgow, as thousands of sport fans are set to descend on Hampden Park, the SSE Hydro and the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome. But while they're busy being distracted by gymnastics, athletics and cycling from 23 July-3 August, you can be making the most of the quiet elsewhere - soaking up the atmosphere of this reformed city with your loved one.

Here are five romantic things to do in Glasgow, Scotland:

1. Step back in time

A stroll through the verdant Kelvingrove Park is wonderfully romantic. You'll be able to admire its Victorian style - with historic buildings fringing the parkland - not to mention explore the old-world bandstand and amphitheatre. It's an 84-acre oasis hidden within the city and bursting with wildlife too, from the grey squirrel to the colourful chaffinch.

Hungry? En route to the park, stop off at one of the city's many bakeries and delicatessens, such as Delizique to create a truly irresistible picnic to take with you.

2. Get cultural!

Glasgow is full to the brim with art galleries, museums and gardens - from St Mungo's to the Gallery of Modern Art. Our personal favourite though is the Glasgow Botanic Gardens. Renowned for its impressive glasshouses and vast collections of tropical plants, this attraction is a great place to take a romantic stroll or a guided tour, whatever the weather. If you get thirsty, there's even a delightful tearoom where you and your belle or beau can enjoy a variety of beverages, not to mention rest those weary feet…

And the best part? Entry is FREE. The gardens are open 7am to dusk year-round, with the glasshouses open 10am-6pm in the summer and 10am-4.15pm in the winter.

3. Relax into river life

One of the best ways to see Scotland's biggest city is by boat, and - let's face it - there are few things more romantic than bobbing along the river. Try Clyde Cruises for a glorious day out for just £15p/p. The trips won't be running during the Games, but it's a great way to see the sights and stadiums before and after. The 90-minute Glasgow City Cruise day explorer ticket means you can hop on and off too, visiting the Glasgow Science Centre, the Riverside Museum and the Braehead Shopping Centre.

4. Worship the patron saint of lovers

While most forget about the 'saint' in St Valentine's Day, he is still very much remembered at Blessed John Duns Scotus' Church, in the Gorbals area of Glasgow. Why, you ask? Well, part of the saint's remains are believed to have been buried here 1,700 years ago, making it the perfect place for romantic tourists to pay homage to the patron - and to love.

5. Head for the Highlands

One of Glasgow's biggest draws is its close proximity to the Highlands: you can get there in just 30 minutes. If it's a wild romantic getaway you're up for, then this is the perfect activity for you. After spending a few days mooching around the city, hire a car and drive out to Loch Lomond, The Trossachs, Stirling and Forth Valley for boat tours and abundant walking opportunities. Spare a day to stroll along the West Highland Way, or take in the rolling views from the magical Inchcailloch Island as well.

Where to stay? Try the comfortable Adelaides guesthouse, in the heart of the city centre. Doubles from £37p/n.

How to get there? Fly from London Gatwick, Heathrow or City to Glasgow International from £74 return with British Airways. Alternatively hop on a train from London Euston to Glasgow Central, via Crewe and Lancaster, from £60 return with Virgin.
