5 European proposal spots

With Valentine’s Day only a week away, Steph Bishop - co-founder of MarryAbroad.co.uk - shares some of her favourite proposal destinations in Europe

Nearly one in three people that get engaged do so while holidaying abroad - that's according to a survey by money-saving website Voucher Codes Pro (www.VoucherCodesPro.co.uk) anyway. On top of that, 52% of couples get engaged on a public holiday or special date such as an anniversary, Valentine's Day or New Year's Eve. So where's best place in Europe to pop the question this 14th February you ask? Well, here's your answer… or five.

Charles Bridge, Prague

This 14th century bridge connecting Prague Castle and the city's Old Town is as romantic as it is practical. Its cobbled path leads you past 30 baroque-style statues, with the Gothic-style Old Bridge Tower shadowing one end. Whether you get down on one knee in bright sunshine or as the mist descends, it makes an atmospheric choice for a Valentine's proposal. Another plus is that it's only a short stroll to a number of intimate restaurants in the Old Town.

How to get there? Direct return flights from Luton to Prague leaving Friday 14 February and returning Sunday 16 February, are £160pp with Wizz Air.

Where to stay? For a stay-at-home vibe, try this spacious apartment in the heart of Prague, from £64pn.

Les Diablerets, Switzerland

For couples who enjoy the snow, this 3,200m-high mountain in the Swiss Alps could be just the place for a stunning proposal. The viewpoint here has a 360-degree view of the Alps with Lake Geneva shimmering in the distance. On a bright day, when the sun bounces off the snow and you get a clear view of the mountains, there's no beating Les Diablerets as a place to ask your loved one to marry you.

How to get there? Direct return flights from Luton to Geneva leaving Friday 14 February and returning Sunday 16 February, are £194pp with easyJet.

Where to stay? For somewhere within walking distance of the slopes, try this chalet in Las Diablerets, from £89pn.

Verona, Italy

'Two households, both alike in dignity. In fair Verona, where we lay our scene…'

How about asking for your partner's hand in marriage in a grand Roman amphitheatre, within the home of the "greatest love story ever told"? Once you've popped the question in the Verona Arena - which dates back to 30AD and is now used for opera performances - you can visit Juliet's iconic balcony (although hopefully your life together will have a happier ending than Shakespeare's star-crossed lovers).

How to get there? Direct return flights from London Gatwick to Verona leaving Friday 14 February and returning Sunday 16 February, are £215pp with easyJet.

Where to stay? Try Verona Divina - just 250m from Juliet's balcony. Prices from £84pn.

The Alhambra, Andalucia, Spain

This famous fortress is a UNESCO World Heritage site dating back to the 9th century and has been described by Moorish poets as a "pearl set in emeralds". It is full of secluded spots where couples could propose. Just imagine receiving a yes under an intricately decorated arch or beside a trickling fountain surrounded by palm trees and the chirps of nightingales.

How to get there? Direct return flights from London City to Granada leaving Friday 14 February and returning Sunday 16 February, are £252pp with British Airways.

Where to stay? Granada Albaicin is a comfortable apartment from just £59pn.

Dubrovnik, Croatia

If none of the above float your love boat, how about asking for his/her hand in marriage while walking along the city walls in Dubrovnik, Croatia? This UNESCO World Heritage site is globally known for its beauty. Its walls also provide a fantastic view of the city below, where the buildings give off golden hue, and the terracotta roofs will simulate a warm glow, even if it is cold outside.

How to get there? Return flights from London to Dubrovnik, via Zagreb, leaving Friday 14 February and returning Sunday 16 February, are £232pp with Croatia Airlines.

Where to stay? This glorious apartment overlooks the old city from its terrace - a truly romantic view from just £39pn.
