5 best sky-high places to propose

5 best sky-high places to propose

Whether it’s atop a mountain, or on the highest level of a London skyscraper, Alexandra Gregg rounds up five of the best places to propose at high altitude…

1. The Shard, London, England

 Shard At Dusk

See London in full high-definition from The Shard. With its panoramic vistas of the 'Big Smoke' below, this pointed skyscraper is the city's tallest viewing platform, and one that's full of character. Visit the 69th floor at dusk to watch the sunset over the Thames, 244 metres below, and take in some of London's best attractions, from the Tower of London and Tower Bridge to the House of Parliament. If you're planning on popping the question, make your visit extra special by booking the champagne package, which includes a glass of fizz. Best of all? Once you've booked your time slot you can stay and enjoy the view for as long as you like… Within the hours of 9am and 10pm of course.

Where is it? Joiner Street, London SE1. Get the tube to London Bridge, The Shard is within walking distance.
How much does it cost? Standard tickets are £24.95p/p, or £32.95p/p with a glass of Lanson champagne.

2. Glacier Skywalk, Alberta, Canada

Brewster Travel Canada - Glacier Skywalk SMALL

Giving way to dramatic snow-capped peaks that sparkle in the summer sunshine, the newly-opened Glacier Skywalk, in the Sunwapta Valley, is a great way to see the Canadian Rockies and the Columbia Icefield. With a 280-metre glass platform, a visit is not for the faint-hearted. You'll be forgiven for clutching your partner's hand as your make your way out onto the horseshoe-shaped walk. The feelings of fear will soon ebb away when you catch a glimpse of the breathtaking views though, and form a special bond with the nature around you: from waterfalls to wildlife. Now is your chance to get down on one knee and ask that all-important question… It's bound to get your adrenaline pumping, and heart racing, even more than the glass walk.

Where is it? Just a five-minute coach ride from the Columbia Icefield Glacier Discovery Centre.
How much does it cost? You'll pay $24.95 (£14.50) for an hour.

3. Blue Mountains, NSW, Australia

Three Sisters AUS - 108431-574

As far as mountains go, the Blue Mountains range is one of the most romantic. Not only is the area full of secluded valleys and romantic retreats, but also the surrounding UNESCO-listed peaks are utterly mesmerising. Take in 300-metre cliffs, slot canyons and waterfalls from the Lillianfells Resort and Spa in Katoomba, which is just a stone's throw from the 'Three Sisters' rock formation. The lore goes that three beautiful young ladies fell in love with three brothers from a different tribe, but law forbade them from marrying. Unhappy with the rules, the brothers tried to capture the three sisters, but a witchdoctor from Katoomba turned them into stone to protect them… Quite the love story! Be sure to tell it to your beloved when you ask for their hand in marriage.

Where is it? The foothills of the range start about 50km west of Sydney.
How much does it cost? Vehicle entry fees are AU$7 (£3.80) per vehicle per day.

4. Iguazú Falls, Argentina/Brazil, South America

Heart pounding, pulse racing - and that's before you've even got down on one knee! The 1km wooden walkway on the Argentinean side of Iguazú Falls takes you above the Devil's Throat, looking down at the most impressive part of the cascades, as they spill over an 82-metre drop. The name may not sound romantic, but the views are stunning and the experience is thrilling. The trip to the falls alone makes for a once-in-a-lifetime adventure, one that could be made even more memorable by your engagement.

Where is it? On the border of the Argentinean province of Misiones and the Brazilian state of Paraná.
How much does it cost? To enter the Argentinean side of the Iguazú National Park, visitors must pay 130 pesos (£9.30) each.

5. Aurland Lookout (Stegastein), Norway

Norway Original - Couple -at -Stegastein -Aurlandsfjellet -112008-99-0188-1500

If you or your partner has vertigo, look away now! This dizziness-inducing platform overlooks the picturesque Aurlandfjord - one of Norway's most expansive fjords - a staggering 650m above sea level. The four-metre-wide wooden platform seems to jut out into nothingness, its abrupt drop shielded only by a single sheet of glass. Standing at the edge is a terrifying yet exhilarating experience, one that just has to be shared with your belle or beau.

Where is it? Aurlandsvegen - the mountain road between Aurland and Lærdal.
How much does it cost? Blissfully free!
