5 alternative places to go in Kenya

5 alternative places to go in Kenya

Seduced by the romance of Africa but already done the classic safari sites? Here are 5 romantic alternatives...

Safaris are popular, and incredibly romantic honeymoon option Kenya is the obvious destination: it's a country where accommodation is spectacular and the wildlife spotting opportunities are second-to-none. But what if you've already been? We asked the experts at Audley where they'd recommend for an alternative African experience in classic Kenya.

1. Lewa Wilderness Conservancy

A combination of beautiful savannah plains, lush swamps and views of Mount Kenya's snow-capped peak make Lewa an irresistible landscape. Wildlife here is prolific with good populations of rhino, lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog and buffalo as well as more unusual Northern species including Grevy's zebra and reticulated giraffe.  With just three small safari lodges, the experience is intimate and unspoilt, ideal for safari-goers wanting to avoid the crowds.

Activities are varied, from game drives to spot the bigger game, guided bush walks to take in the smaller details and more unusual activities such as camel rides and horse rides to watch the game from a very different perspective. Lewa is a model example of community-based conservation, where safari lodges, conservationists and local communities work alongside each other to preserve the landscapes and wildlife, for the benefits of everyone.

2. Loisaba Wilderness

Loisaba Wilderness is a vast and rugged group ranch, located in the Laikipia region of Kenya. The views here stretch as far as the Matthews Mountain range, best enjoyed with a cool drink at sunset from one of the ranch's various hills and rocky outcrops. The terrain here is varied with vast snaking rivers and acacia woodland, providing home to a variety of wildlife including elephant, Beisa oryx, lion, hyena and more. Birding here is particularly rewarding, too.

A safari in Loisaba is as much about enjoying this wild landscape as the wildlife itself, and the activities are testament to that - each day you can choose from game drives, river rafting, camel rides and guided walks with Samburu guides. For true romantics, spend a night in one of the two Starbeds, where you sleep in a four-poster bed on a raised platform, with only a mosquito net between you and the African stars.

3. Meru National Park.

Another of Kenya's hidden gems, Meru is located to the east of Mount Kenya and is bursting with wildlife. All of the "Big Five" can be found here, as well as rarer species such as gerenuk and Jackson's hartebeest. Both black and white rhino are found in the large rhino sanctuary within the park, offering excellent chances of seeing these rare gentle giants. Thirteen rivers flow through Meru, creating a lush green landscape filled with towering borassus palm trees.

As well as traditional game drives and safari walks, guests can enjoy fishing trips in the river and visits to the nearby Boran community. With just three safari camps here, all spread across different parts of the park, wildlife viewing is uninterrupted - ideal for keen photographers and safari connoisseurs.

4. The Chyulu Hills

The Chyulu Hills lie in the south of Kenya and are a truly magical spot. Rolling hills which are untouched by civilisation stretch as far as Mount Kilimanjaro across the border in Tanzania, offering picture-postcard views from the two lodges here. The area is also home to some of the last remaining big tusker elephants, which Kenya named its beer after, many of whom were wiped out during the ivory trade days.

An ideal spot to unwind at the start or end of a safari, take in the views, and relax, there are also plenty of excursions to enjoy for the more restless - mountain biking, horse riding, walking safaris and game drives.

5. The Karisia Hills

Visitors seeking something truly unique will love Karisia's walking expeditions in the Karisia Hills; this is the perfect option for the more intrepid honeymooners. Set off for between three and seven nights, exploring this Laikipia region on foot accompanied by Samburu guides and camels who carry your tents, food and other equipment. Each day you walk to your next spot in the cooler hours of early morning and late afternoon, resting under a shady tree at lunchtime.

As well as taking in incredible views and accessing areas far from safari lodges and camps, you may come across wildlife, swim in rivers and lakes, explore waterfalls and spend time with local Samburu communities. At night, sit around the campfire after dinner and rest in your own comfortable tent. There are three options for standards of camp, ranging from simple fly-camps to a more luxurious tent.
