4 romantic fireworks festivals

Start your Bonfire Night with a bang and make sparks fly with this romantic roundup of the best firework displays from around the world.

Bonfire Night, England

Ooooh, aaahhh... Remember, remember the 5th of November... in England it might be most famous for gunpowder, treason and plot (as the anniversary of when Guy Fawkes failed to blow up parliament in 1605) but it's also a good excuse to get cosy. Huge bonfires, firework displays, mulled wine and toffee apples are always in full flow this time of year. Wrap up warm and head to the quaint village of Rye, East Sussex, for torch-lit processions along cobbled streets as well as spectacular fireworks displays and raging bonfires.

Keep your fires burning... The weather isn't great in England come November, but don't let that put you off an autumnal walk in the woods, which can always be followed by a traditional Sunday roast in a pub as you cuddle up in front of the fire. The George in Rye offer delicious lunches and if you really can't face the cold, they have a selection of cosy boutique bedrooms to choose from too.

Independence Day, America

Ooooh, aaahhh... In order to celebrate one of the most important holidays on the American calendar, an array of festivities take place throughout the country on July 4th, with fireworks being at the height of the celebrations. Choose from mind-blowing city shows such as Boston's six-day stint with a fireworks display on the Charles River, or if your after something more low-key, then the fireworks on Georgia's Savannah river front always offer a picturesque display.

Keep your fires burning... If you plan to head to Boston for your dose of Independence fireworks, take advantage of the summer evening and book a table at Boston's most romantic restaurant, Top of the Hub, which will give you first-class views of the city's most outstanding firework show.

New Year's Eve, Australia

Ooooh, aaahhh... Boozy parties, dinner with friends or a quiet night in, New Year's Eve can be whatever you make it. But world-class fireworks showering the skies of Sydney Harbour as they shoot off the city's iconic Harbour Bridge has to be one of the best ways to bring in the New Year. If you want to avoid the busy crowds, then what better way to seal your New Year's kiss than on the deck of a luxury boat overlooking Sydney Harbour?! Sing Auld Lang Syne as the firework-filled sky acts as the perfect backdrop to a New Year's eve you'll never forget.

Keep your fires burning... Soothe those New Year hangovers and take advantage of the summer sun with a coastal walk along Bondi Beach to Coogee. Or if you want to escape the city altogether, hire a car and take a romantic drive to the Blue Mountains, where you can watch the sunrise at the Wentworth Falls or for the more adventurous, take the scenic walk to the Three Sisters, for spectacular views of the valley.

Chinese New Year, Hong Kong

Ooooh, aaahhh... China is always its most colourful during Spring Festival (Chinese New Year) but unfortunately, it's the worst time to visit! As it's one of China's two National Holidays, the whole country is on the move making travel expensive, longwinded and uncomfortable, and many shops and restaurants closed for at least some of the 15 day celebrations. A better plan is to head somewhere with a large Chinese population to see in the Year of the Snake, so you can soak up the atmosphere with less of the hassle. Hong Kong, a city known for its imagination where pyrotechnics are concerned, won't disappoint.

Keep your fires burning... Wine and dine the night away with heart-stopping views of the city at Hong Kong's iconic skyscraper, the Peak. Time your dinner date with the city's Symphony of Lights Show and watch Hong Kong dazzle and glow as you indulge in traditional Chinese cuisine.
