Real Honeymoon: The Galapagos

Real Honeymoon: The Galapagos

Steven and Marisa visited the Galapagos for their honeymoon – here’s their advice if you’re planning your trip

We did an 8 day cruise on a catamaran visiting San Cristobal, Lobos, Española, Floreana, Santa Cruz, Isabela, Fernandina, Bartolome and Plazas. Each island we visited was different from each other and anywhere either of us had been before. It was great to experience it together on our honeymoon.

The animals were fascinating. On land, the blue-footed boobies were our favourites; their mating dance is so funny! There were hundreds of sea lions lying on the beach - it's true that they aren't scared of people; we could walk right past them. There were iguanas, lava crabs, frigate birds and penguins... bizarre! We got to see the tortoises and learning about the conservation projects at the Charles Darwin research centre.

The snorkelling was excellent, and it was a lot of fun swimming along together.  As expected we saw a lot of tropical fish, but the sea lions were amazing! They swam around us and looked in through our masks, a penguin zoomed past and we got so close to turtles that we had to stop ourselves floating into them. And there was always a hot chocolate waiting for us when we got back to the boat.

The catamaran was nice, and the crew and all the other guests were really friendly. One night they made us a cake to congratulate us on our wedding, and we shared it with everyone. But because you'll be sharing the boat with other people, it's definitely worth spending a week or so doing the trip, then going somewhere else to spend time alone together. We went to stay in a Hacienda near Otavalo in Ecuador.

We wrote postcards and dropped them off at the 'Post Office Barrel' on Floreana. The idea is that you leave a card, and take one home to deliver to anyone who lives close to you. Delivering the card back in Yorkshire, and having a chat with the recipient, really brought back how special our honeymoon was!
