Honeymoon Secrets: Kerala

Dreaming of a romantic honeymoon in India? We've asked the experts at Mahindra Homestays for their honeymoon secrets in Kerala...

Honeymoon Secret #1

Float away to paradise on a luxury houseboat

Shh… An intriguing and unique way to travel in Kerala is by houseboat. Enjoy some alone time on an overnight trip in the Alleppey or Kumarakom backwaters. Well-equipped houseboats with luxurious furnishings and a healthy supply of food will leave you relaxed and well-fed.

Tell me more… There are a lot of houseboats that ply the waterways, so if you are booking ahead make sure you do plenty of research and read reviews for the company you are choosing to travel with.

Honeymoon Secret #2

Trekking trails of Mananthavady in Wayanad

Shh… If you're an adventurous couple, Wayanad has some beautiful, untouched trekking trails around Mananthavady. The coffee plantations, hills and rainforest terrain are perfect for a few days of downtime.

Tell me more… There are plenty of homestays in Wayanad, mostly on sweeping coffee plantations, where you can combine romance and privacy with experiencing a side of India that no hotel can offer, the hospitality of an Indian family. The freshly brewed coffee is amazing, and your hosts will be able to help you plan your treks.

Honeymoon Secret #3

Plantation stay in Munnar

Shh… The tea plantation landscapes of Munnar are extremely romantic and, as with Wayanad, many plantations have rooms or guest lodges. Take long walks and lose yourselves in the neatly lined tea gardens before retiring to a lounge to sample some of the best brews over board games or a good book.

Tell me more… If you can prise yourselves away from the colonial gentility of your plantation stay, there's plenty to do in Munnar. Top of the list is Top Station, 1700m above sea level, for panoramic views over the neighbouring state of Tamil Nadu. Don't miss Eravikulam National Park, about 15 km from Munnar. It's most famous for its endangered inhabitant - the Nilgiri Tahr ibex - but it's also a great place for trekking.

Honeymoon Secret #4

Hit the beaches

Shh… There are plenty of hidden coves along Kerala's spectacular coastline. Varkala beach (51 km north of Thiruvananthapuram city and 37 km south of Kollam, in south Kerala) is relatively unexplored and has a nice bohemian vibe to it. There's a massive cliff which drops onto a wide, sandy expanse running down to the sea and it is easy to while away the day on the beach, exploring nearby shrines, or in one of the small local cafes that serve excellent sea food.

Tell me more… Varkala is famous for its mineral springs (believed to purge the body of impurities and the soul of all sins) and fantastic Ayurvedic massages. The perfect place to cleanse and rejuvenate together!

Honeymoon Secret #5

Waterfall picnic spot

Shh… With a view to die for, the three-tiered Soochippara Waterfall (also known Sentinel Rock waterfall) lies in the Vellarimala of Wayanad. It's a 1km walk to the falls from where you park; you probably won't be alone as there are treks that start and finish here. But there are plenty of nooks and crannies to purposely get lost in.

Tell me more… Take your swimming gear and a picnic basket - and be aware there isn't anywhere to change clothes or buy food where you're there.
