Philippa Kaye, founder of HotelsUnder100.co.uk, shares her three favourite places to stay in India where rooms cost less than £100 per night
As a specialist in luxury travel to India for 15 years and a temporary resident for five years, Philippa Kaye is the founder of the newly launched website HotelsUnder100.co.uk. The team have discovered affordable authentic experiences in India, Sri Lanka and Zambia... to start with! Philippa has picked her three favourite places to stay in India - they're beautiful, they're boutique and most of all, they're budget friendly! Shhhh…
Shh… Dholpur is just 45 minutes from the Taj Mahal (incredibly romantic) so staying in the city gives you all the benefits of seeing the Taj while on honeymoon but not having to stay in the grotty city of Agra. TheRaj Niwas Palace is a bargain as they have private pool villas for just £80 per room per night.
Tell me more… It's also located close to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Fatehpur Sikri - a magnificent ghost city which is well worth a visit. Honeymooners should definitely then take the opportunity to continue on to Jaipur and the rest of Rajasthan, or even to Ranthambhore for a tiger safari.
Shh… Bundi is like the land that time forgot. Rajasthan before the tourists! Bundi Villas is set in one of the most romantic of locations, right on the ramparts overlooking the impressive Bundi Garh Palace which is lit up in the evenings. Honeymooners should push to stay in room four - I highly recommend it. It is the most spacious with a wonderful queen size double bed.
Shh… For the more active honeymooners, my third recommendation is the Itmenaan Estate - there is simply no better place to walk hand-in-hand as you are surrounded by stunning scenery. It is a beautifully converted village house literally in the middle of nowhere. In the hills of the Kumaon, guests are surrounded by views of the snow-capped Nanda Devi range of mountains.
Tell me more… Couples can take half or full day walks, in the surrounding areas, with spectacular views and then return to enjoy delicious food - lunches of chick pea, pomegranate and coriander salad, or organic lettuce and wild strawberry salad (picked from the morning walk) with balsamic dressing… delicious.
Detailing a range of independent hotels that offer rooms under £100 a night, HotelsUnder100.co.uk lists a carefully selected portfolio of privately owned, character hotels offering charm and local experiences that won't break the bank. Plus every property on the website has either been reviewed or recommended and these personal diary-style reports can be found in the 'what we say' sections.
