Discover the World, the world’s leading Iceland specialists, share their Insider Secrets for the three most romantic spots on this ruggedly beautiful island
A tapestry of ancient lava fields, live volcanoes, cascading waterfalls, graceful fjords, healing hotsprings and sweeping swathes of mauve lupins are the backdrop to Iceland's gourmet treats and charming hotels. Whether you bask in midnight sun or gaze at the Northern Lights, the land of fire and ice is an unbelievably romantic honeymoon setting, if the natural world gets your hearts pounding. Heather Smith from Iceland specialists Discover the World shares her secrets...
Shh… The beautiful Hvalfjordur (a fjord just 45 minutes drive from Reykjavik) is the setting for the adventurous; take a short hike to one of the most beautiful and inaccessible waterfalls in Iceland. Glymur waterfall is the highest waterfall in Iceland (at 196m) and is only accessible by foot. It's also a superb location ideal for exploring Thingvellir National Park where you can see continents divide, spouting Geysir and the thundering waterfall Gullfoss.
Tell me more… Stay at Hotel Glymur. This sumptuously and elegantly designed hotel has two perfectly placed hot tubs with the most breathtaking views of the fjord and surrounding mountains. Perfect for gazing at the Northern Lights during the dark winter months or enjoying the tranquil quiet of the midnight sun. Definitely an experience not to be missed!
Shh… From the road you could mistake this ethereal lagoon for being a small lake, but Jökulsárlón is one of the most extraordinary sights in Iceland. Take a Zodiac boat trip to get up close and personal with the towering icebergs that splinter off from the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier. Your driver and guide will fill you in on the history of the glacier, stopping to allow the maximum photo opportunities of the icebergs, the glacier and the resident seals.
Tell me more… Stop to stroll along the volcanic black sand beach where the lagoon meets the Atlantic Ocean as icebergs sail out into the surf. See small glass-like chunks of ice wash up on the shore. And indulge in a hot chocolate laced with rum back at the visitor centre.
Shh… The chef at Hotel Budir has created one of the most heavenly menus in Iceland, enough to blow the minds, bodies and souls of any connoisseur couples. Traditional Icelandic cooking is combined delicately with French influences to produce some of the most sensual experiences of food you are ever likely to experience. What's more, Hotel Budir uses only local produce, including fresh lamb and fish.
Tell me more… It's not just good food - Hotel Budir has irresistibly romantic views from every corner. Look out to sea, across the Snaefellsness Peninsula, or curl up in the peaceful lounges to read Jules Verne's Journey to the Centre of the Earth, just a short distance from Snaefellsjokull, the glacier that inspired him.
Heather Smith has worked in travel for six years. Since joining Discover the World she has super-jeeped around Lake Myvatn, experienced the Northern Lights dance at the top of a mountain, snowmobiled around Swedish forests, eaten a lot of beautiful lamb, and bathed in the Blue Lagoon's healing waters.
