Honeymoon Secrets: Colombia

Honeymoon in Colombia? Ethan from Playa Koralia explains why the Colombian Caribbean is perfect for a honeymoon and shares his Honeymoon Secrets

Honeymoon Secret #1

Honeymoon on the Colombian Caribbean in February

Shh… February is the prettiest time of the year for a honeymoon, with clear oceans, transparent rivers, and spotless blue skies. It is also one of the least touristy months of the year so you can escape the cold winters and have very few people to share the beaches with.

Tell me more… There's still snow on the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta (the highest coastal mountain chain in the world at 5,776m and just 40km from the ocean) so you can swim in the warm Caribbean while gazing at the white snowy peaks. Truly unique!

Honeymoon Secret #2

Explore the National Parks

Shh… Colombia's National Park system is one of the most expansive and majestic in the world. Go hiking in the high altitude plateaus of El Cocouy; there's a range of day hikes or a 6 night cabana-cabana trek.

Tell me more… Or stay at sea-level - Parque Tayrona (check out the picture below) on the coast is a lush tropical paradise. The park is great to visit, but does get busy, so staying outside the park is much more private. There you can find truly virgin beaches where you are the only one witnessing the fall of the ocean.

Honeymoon Secret #3

Stroll the artist's town Barichara

Shh... This small artist's town nestled into the mountains is an escape into a different era. It's similar to Villa de Leyva, but must less touristy and considered the prettiest village in Colombia. The slow pace of life in Baricahara is perfect for a chilled out honeymoon - while you're exploring, don't miss the breath-taking sunset lookout point over the Suárez River valley. If you're after a more action packed honeymoon, try rappelling down the nearby Juan Curí medicinal waterfalls.

Tell me more… On your way there from Bogota or Tunja, stop at the hot springs at Paipa first, then continue on to Barichara and the Chica Mocha Canyon where you can take a cablecar across the 1,000 foot deep canyon!

Honeymoon Secret #4

Keep it short and sweet

Shh… When visiting the coast, fly into Cartagena and take 2/3 days there. It's very small and more than that means you risk getting bored. While you're in Cartagena, visit the Gold and Archaeological Museum and walk the city walls.

Tell me more…  Out of Cartagena, skip over Barranquilla (it's quite industrial) and Santa Marta - head up towards Parque Tayrona.

Honeymoon Secret #5

Shh… Bogota is a big city with loads to do, but be sure to see the Botero Museum. He bequeathed a large amount of his personal work, but more importantly a larger portion of his personal collection.

Tell me more… This surprisingly intimate museum in the cozy La Candalaria neighborhood is a greatest hits gallery, with works from Monet, Bacon, Miro, Dali, Picaso and on. It's free and amazingly accessible.

Honeymoon expert:

Ethan Rosch is a New Yorker who moved down to the Colombia Caribbean to help out in his wife's family business, swapping skyscrapers for palm trees.  He has now lived the dream there for over two years and has come to realize the true magic of the region and their hotel Playa Koralia.
