Honeymoon Secrets: Africa’s most LGBT friendly honeymoon destinations

Honeymoon Secrets: Africa’s most LGBT friendly honeymoon destinations

Make sure the most romantic trip of your lives isn't spoilt by prejudice. We've asked the experts at Rainbow Tours to share their Insider Secrets on Africa’s most LGBT friendly honeymoon destinations; Kirsten Woolley and Derek Schuurman give you the inside scoop

Secret 1. South Africa - the gay-friendly capital of Africa

Shh... Cape Town is probably the most gay-friendly place in Africa, and offers a huge amount for visitors including beaches and plenty of outdoor life, stylish cafes, shopping and beautiful people. It's a fantastic place for same sex honeymoons and, from big waterfront hotels to small, boutique guesthouses, couples can be assured of a warm welcome.

Further afield along the Garden Route into the Winelands there are some really stylish gay-run hotels, and gay-friendly safari lodges in top game viewing areas such as Sabi Sands or the non-malarial Madikwe on the Botswana border. It's really easy to create a trip combining a fantastic safari experience and stylish break in Cape Town.

Tell me more... In Cape Town stay at the uber-stylish Kensington Place, on the slopes of Table Mountain. Right in the centre of the Winelands (between Stellenbosch and Franschhoek) Babylonstoren is a beautifully restored Cape Dutch working farm that is owned and managed by the former editor of South African Elle Decoration. For a really memorable honeymoon safari experience, Simbambili Game Lodge in Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve is famed for its large cat sightings.

Secret 2. Mozambique - for laid back honeymoon luxury

Shh... The quiet coast of Mozambique is an excellent choice, with small boutique lodges that are very comfortable with gay honeymooners. Head to the Bazaruto and Quirimbas Archipelagos for the best experiences - crystal clear waters, white sandy beaches and fantastic personal, attentive service. Many of the lodges here offer honeymoon benefits for all couples; romantic treats include private dinners on the beach and petal baths.

Tell me more... In the Bazaruto Archipelago, Marlin Lodge has received rave reviews from same-sex honeymooners. The lodge comprises just 16 spacious suites on the tiny unspoilt island of Benguerra, offering complete privacy. This friendly lodge offers an excellent range of things to do, from snorkelling and watersports to picnics on nearby islands and sunset cruises on a traditional dhow.

Secret 3. Madagascar - for wildlife and unspoilt beaches

Shh... Madagascar is an absolutely fabulous place for a honeymoon, gay or straight. It has some of the most unique and unusual wildlife anywhere in the world, coupled with perfect tropical beaches and luxury lodges. People in Madagascar tend to be fairly modest and public displays of affection between people are rare, so same-sex couples simply need to choose their accommodation carefully to enjoy a fantastic experience.

Many of the lodges all around the country are very secluded and completely gay-friendly. This is particularly so in the semi-arid south, which is home to fascinating drought-resistant plants and animals. There are also exceptional lodges on the beaches and islands in the sublime, tropical north-western region. Take the advice of your tour operator who can provide upfront feedback.

Tell me more... On the south-east coast, the luxury thatched bungalows of Manafiafy Beach and Rainforest Lodge offers a real taste of many elements of Madagascar all in one place. Relax on the pristine beach, snorkel off remote islands, and even occasionally spot whales passing close to the lodge. Or you could take a trip to the mangroves in search of bird life and reptiles and explore the rainforest to look for the iconic lemurs.
