Here are a few tips:

Check the rules - visit embassy websites and www.fco.gov.uk before you travel. Be aware that in some countries things that are legal at home may be illegal (eg kissing in public in Dubai, chewing gum on Singapore's transit network)

Carry a doctor's letter if you've packed prescription medicines or hypodermic needles

Never carry items for others - think carefully about what medicines you can legally carry across borders; never carry recreational drugs

Dress appropriately - cover knees and shoulders if travelling in conservative places (this includes visits to Catholic churches as well as Muslim nations)

Know your limits - blood alcohol limits for driving are stricter in Europe, Australia and Canada, so you're more likely to fail breath tests the morning after a big night
